The Most Important Paragraph You'll Ever Write!
Can you tell others about yourself and what you offer in the time it takes for an elevator ride?
"Elevator speech" is a common business term that means a short speech of from 15 seconds to two minutes that gives the most important information that you want a potential client or networking partner to know about you. Here are the most important parts of an elevator speech:
- Your name and the name of your company--and a way for people to remember it if appropriate (what it rhymes with, like a famous person's last name, etc.)
- What it is you do and credibility points about your work or training, including what makes you different from others doing the same work.
- Who you help--what kind of clients you work with--Examples: People recovering from serious illness (holistic health practitioner), Stressed out employees in the corporate world (laughter coach).
- What it is that you do for your clients or that you help them do--Examples: reduce stress (massage therapist), create order from chaos (organization specialist), help people define and move toward their goals (coach), succeed in school (tutor).
- Other impressive facts about you--honors, awards, experience, etc.
If appropriate, what you're promoting or looking for--for example "I'm looking for opportunities to speak to groups about (your specialty)" or "I'm looking for places to hold my workshops."
Write this out and practice it until you can say it easily and smoothly from memory. It should literally roll right off your tongue. You won't always use every element of it in every situation, but you'll have the basics down so you'll never be at a loss for words--now on to that networking event!
