Creature Feature:
"Ellie"
the Abused Boa

Red Tailed Boa

Ellie is a snake, a large snake -- a red tailed boa constrictor who's approaching 7-foot long (not even half grown). She is one of the worst abuse cases we've ever seen at Zooniversity.
Ellie came to Zooniversity 5 years ago, after being found by a police officer in an abandoned garage in Irving, Texas. Someone had put her in a small plastic box to die. She laid in that box for more than a year without food or water. The only other thing in that box was a rat skeleton and her open wounds from where the rat tried to eat her.
Ellie is a resilient survivor. It took a year to get her weight back on and for her wounds to heal. It took another year before she would eat rats again (we had to use chicks in the interim). Today, she is happy, healthy, eating, and growing...and growing.
This is not a house pet. Large constrictors belong where nature intended them to be -- in the rainforest. Unfortunately, most pet stores sell the tiny hatchlings without full disclosure of their eventual adult size. And, when no longer wanted, they are discarded like Ellie or "set free" to either die or to populate a non-native habitat.
Ellie doesn't have any scars to show for the trauma she endured. She's not even mean or aggressive towards people in retaliation. She is amazingly forgiving of our human ignorance.Today, she has become one of Zooniversity's favorite animal ambassadors. And, when appropriate, we share her story, in hopes that what happened to her won't be repeated.

Animal Fun Fact
The largest snakes in the world are the reticulated python, the Burmese python and the anaconda -- each can grow to be 30 feet long and are often sold in pet stores!
