"Rocky"
the Kinkajou

Kinkajou

"Rocky" is not a monkey. He is a rare rainforest creature, called a kinkajou, who's actually related to the raccoon. You'd normally find him sleeping peacefully in a hollow tree deep in the rainforests of Central America. But he's not there, he's here at Zooniversity. Rocky's former owner paid $2,000 for what he thought was a tame, cuddly, hand-raised, bundle of love. What he got was a wild-caught (meaning ripped out the rainforest), scared to death, wild animal. Rocky was put into a ferret cage on the man's back porch and, when the momentary fascination wore off, Rocky spent the entire winter there. By the time we were called in the Spring, Rocky had a respiratory infection and a jaw infection from teeth that rotted after being clipped-off by the importers. That was three years, two dental surgeries, and countless behavioral training sessions ago. Today, he is happy, healthy, and trusting of his human keepers -- and he is one of Zooniversity's most beloved animal ambassadors.

Animal Fun Fact
The cute and prickly hedgehog covers itself from head to toe with a foamy saliva -- scientists call it "anointing." Why? The foam has the same chemical properties as insect repellent. This insect eater wants to eat bugs, but it doesn't want bugs to eat it!
