Greetings!
Will you join us in a walk to help break the link between media violence and youth violence and suicide? This year, MDR is participating in Be the Cause's 10th Annual Walk for Hope! We are raising awareness and FUNDS to help bring MDR's Media Awareness Peer Mentor Program to 6 Los Angeles County High Schools this year! By training teenagers to be critical thinkers, decision makers, conscious consumers and creators of media, we work to help break the link between media violence and teenage acts of violence. Walk for hope and help MDR raise funds for its Media Education Peer Mentor Program. Your efforts and donations will ensure a FREE Mentor Program to Southern California students. Proceeds will help cover the costs of curriculum, materials, students training sessions, and student-lead workshops. For details on how to join us, please see below! FYI (For Your Information)
Do you know how many hours a day youth ages 8-18 years old devote to entertainment media?
According to a 2010 Kaiser Family Foundation study, they devote 7 hours and 38 minutes a day. For Black and Latino youth, that number jumps to 13 hours a day devoted to entertainment media. And unfortunately, Black and Latino people are disproportionately represented as violent, poor, uneducated, immoral and sexually promiscuous in media messages.
Overexposure to degrading media messages results in these teens normalizing and emulating violent and risky behavior. Studies now link overexposure to degrading media with increased rates of sexually transmitted diseases, aggressive behavior, school violence, incarceration rates, gang culture and suicide among teens.
