TOMORROW, Friday April 8th at 8:30am PST, Shaunelle Curry, Executive Director of Mother's Day Radio will speak in a panel discussion at Black Women for Wellness' Sisters @ Eight.
We will discuss Black women's representation in the media. Some of the discussion topics include the following:
- Colorism - does the media promote certain images of what we should consider beautiful, and how do these images translate into real world issues
- Health disparities- Several studies have shown that young women who watch an abundance of rap videos are more likely to engage in risky behavior, including violence, drugs and riskier sex habits. What are the images promoting, and how are they effecting our health as a whole
- Image - how does our hair and dress change the way we see each other, and how we are treated
- Historical prevalence - Are we still stuck in the same three roles in media, Saffire, Jezebel and Mammie... how does this effect the way Black women are treated...
- Self esteem- how and why images that we see in everyday life, effect our image of self
