Gary on Twitter

Our old Twitter account got so clogged with eBay SPAM, FaceBook Pushes and other non-human garbage that we shut it down.  Gary started a new account, tabula rasa, and it's real!  You may not care what beer or cheese he just ate...or you might...but I guarantee it's real and definitely entertaining.  Give him a follow...tweet tweet...
Greetings!

 "Hi!"

The European Bass Convention held in Copenhagen August 4th through the 19th was a huge success, not only for the organization themselves but us as well!  We had two Brescians with us, one a large model made out of English Sycamore that Gary and I entered into the tone competition and a smaller "Brescian Light" made out of solid poplar.  The poplar Brescian was built as a grant bass to be donated to a musician in need.  The winner also happened to be the winner of the Jazz competition!

The second bass, our maple Brescian, was entered into the tone competition.  This competition did not account for making, just tone...and it was a "blindfolded" event.  There were three panels of judges, the players jury, the makers jury and the audience.  Gary and I sat in on the event and had votes in hand.  If you think you know what your bass sounds like...try picking it out of 10 basses by ear!  You could not play games and vote for the bass you wanted to win...you had to actually listen and vote on what YOU thought was the best.  This was an interesting event and I strongly urge other organizations to follow this model.  We all walked away learning more about tone and what we like in a bass.  We also walked away with a first place certificate from the players jury!

If you've been following Gary on FaceBook or Twitter, you know we've been making some major progress on our new workshop.  The foundation is done, the beams are laid, and it's time to raise the walls.  Since this is a old world style post and beam construction, we're doing it old world style and having a good old fashion BARN RAISING!  Come be a part of Upton Bass for the day and give us a hand (or two...and your back!).  Both the Stonington and Boston workshops will be closed on Saturday August 25th for this event and we would love to have you be a part of this day!

Gary adds Facebook posts all the time on our bass progress here in the shop, as well as our adventures in the creation of a new home for Upton Bass!  Gary is restoring a 1800's Witch Hazel mill on his property and turning it into a Post & Beam workshop.  Check it out on FaceBook - your feedback is always appreciated.

Drop us a line any time. And remember... the best is yet to come!

COPENHAGEN
What an amazing city Kobenhaven is!  Gary and I are back from a truly rewarding trip.  We took two basses with us, both variations on our new Brescian models.  The first, a Brescian "light" made with a solid poplar back was made as a grant bass and was awarded to a Copenhagen double bassist for a two year period.  The second Brescian, a solid maple one of full proportions, was made exclusively by Gary & myself to be entered into the tone competition where it tied for first place with the Krahmer brothers of E.M.Pollmann by the players jury.  On Friday afternoon there was a performance using some of the award winning basses.  Gary shot a few minutes with his iPhone, enjoy!  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en_aY2aWZSQ
