What are Students Doing in the Classroom?
By Lisa Lazansky-Roach

Jackie Sanchez (Mirta Ramirez High School Computer Science Teacher) had her students create photomontage projects in her computer graphics class during semester 1.  These projects took over a month to complete including learning how to use Photoshop.  These projects are compiled of at least ten edited images.  The students first had to choose a song lyrics or poem line to inspire their creativity.  They wrote proposals for their ideas and worked very diligently to both edit the images and to choose appealing colors and compositions.  The final projects went through a vigorous classroom critique where the students were asked to speak about their work, take both praise and criticism from their peers, and defend their design choices.  These pieces proudly hang on the second floor at Mirta Ramirez.

What are Teachers Doing Outside the Classroom?

Robert Clarke (9th Grade Math Teacher at Mirta Ramirez High School) presented a professional development to all of the Aspira high school math teachers on February 12, 2010.  The professional development consisted of four activities that allowed participants to investigate a series of profound mathematical concepts in non-threatening ways.  Two of the activities involved the construction and use of physical models in order to assist with problem solving.  Below is the construction of cubes that teachers made out of tinker toys.  The groups were asked to find the midpoints of the three sides of the triangle formed when connected with the string and to find the measure of a specific angle.
