ASPIRA Early College
By 10th AEC student Gabriela Navarro
ASPIRA Early College (AEC) students will soon have the opportunity to express their artistic talents through the Artreach at Lillstreet program. Through the program, students learn and explore history, anthropology and science while working with clay, glaze, paint, paper and other materials. The Artreach at Lillstreet program would include 10 sessions (all at AEC) for a total cost of $60. That's just $6 per session for formal art instruction materials.
Artreach programs not only have an impact on students but the community as a whole. Artreach has worked with children, teenagers and adults to produce and install permanent artworks around Chicago. Mosaic murals, benches, tables and sculptures are located in area schools, parks and libraries. Artreach also produced the award-winning project "Peace Signs." This project paired professional artists with young artists to create billboards addressing gun violence. Gun violence is a topic AEC students are familiar with after recently engaging in a project-based unit of study on gun violence and creating POL's or presentations of learning. More information is available at http://www.artreachatlillstreet.org or by sending an e-mail to artreachatlillstreet@yahoo.com.

The AEC cheerleading squad was founded on November 18, 2009. Two juniors, Steyvia Ramey and Giovanna Caceres are the captains of the squad. The squad practices in the AEC lobby Monday through Thursday (and sometimes on Friday) from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. They get their spirit from each other and have fun while learning new things. The squad cheered on the Puma basketball team to win games this past season. Although they have not gone to any competitions, they are planning to in the future.
Up Coming Event! Through the Teach for America program, Ms. Dowdle and Ms. Klein are taking a select group of juniors to the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin on March 19, 2010. The group includes 12 students who were selected out 35 juniors who submitted essays to Ms. Dowdle and Ms. Klein. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn more about the college experience.
