ASPIRA Haugan Middle School Highlights

· Math
& Science POL (Presentation of Learning) a success!
ASPIRA Haugan held its first formal POL (Presentation
of Learning) of the year. The POL took
place Thursday, November 19. Students
were eager to showcase and demonstrate their hands-on math and science projects
with family, friends, and neighbors. Our demonstrations included solving
equations using scales, number raps, calculating discounts, testing household
items from paper towel to toothpaste, behavioral science, botany and much,
much, more. It was a fun-filled night of
wonderful presentations, a raffle drawing for a Thanksgiving basket, delicious
food, and friendly conversations. (see

· Haugan's
future scientists shine!
Our Science Fair was held on Tuesday,
November 17, 2009. Over seventy of our
students presented their science projects and research papers to their teachers
and peers. They also presented their
projects to Professor Dolan and his students from Northeastern Illinois
University. Our visitors from NEIU had
the difficult task of selecting three students to represent our school at the
Area One Science Fair on January 15. The
Area One Science participants are:
Ndeyiah Corneh "The Stroop
Effect", Adriana Garcia 'How Does Household Cleaning Products Affect
Plant Life, and Eva Rivera "Does Salt
Affect a Pinto Bean's Growth?" (see

ASPIRA club gives back to their community on Thanksgiving!
Five members of the school's ASPIRA
Club delivered boxes of non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products
which were collected through the school's annual food drive. This donation was offered to Transfiguration of
the Lord Church on Tuesday, November 24.

School supports in the fight against Leukemia!
Our school is collecting loose change to
support the ongoing research to find a cure for Leukemia. Every classroom has a box in which students
donate spare change. This campaign of
Pennies for Patients is very close to our hearts at haugan. (see picture)

· Congratulations
Ms. Lopez!
Ms. Lopez, 6th grade math, was
the fortunate winner of our annual Thanksgiving basket raffle for faculty and
staff. (see picture)
