AEC ASPIRA Club: "Teen
Peace Poetry Jam"
On Thursday October 1st, 2009,
the ASPIRA Club at the ASPIRA Early College High School (AEC) hosted a
"Teen Peace Poetry Jam" to kick off the month-long school community focus
on the topic of "peace." AEC
Students performed original poetry on the topic of peace and youth from the Miracle Center performed dance and poetry. The event also included an anti-violence
presentation from the Ceasefire program. After the event, over Pizza, students
were able to meet the Miracle
Center staff and have an
opportunity to speak to the Ceasefire outreach workers.
On Monday, October 5th, in partnership with the Miracle Center, the AEC ASPIRA Club began the
Young Entrepreneur Program (YEP), a paid internship program for thirty student
participants. For four afternoons a
week, the thirty students come together to learn about business and marketing.
This fall semester the focus of this paid internship program is marketing through
social mediums and technologies, and will include bringing in Latino business
professionals to talk about their paths toward building their businesses and
careers.
AEC Youth Entrepreneur
Program (YEP)
ASPIRA Club members, known as
ASPIRANTEs, learn and grow through the ASPIRA Process, in which they develop
leadership & critical thinking skills following the 3 A's: Awareness, Analysis and Action. The AEC ASPIRA Club "become aware" of "Peace
in Schools" as a critical issue following the recent wave of youth violence in Chicago, they determined
that they wanted to build awareness for themselves and their fellow students,
and organized the Poetry Jam to build more understanding. The ASPIRA Youth Development Division, under
the leadership of CYDO Ivette Nieves, supports ASPIRA Clubs in the four ASPIRA Charter
School campuses and in
thirteen traditional Chicago Public Schools.
Each year over 1000 ASPIRA Club members participate in ASPIRA workshops
and activities, including but not limited to college fairs and field trips,
career search & job readiness, and College Readiness/ FAFSA workshops.
