Year in Review:
Greenville County Lives United

Margaret LUAs we gather with family and friends to celebrate the holiday season and reflect upon the closing of another year, we would like to express our deepest gratitude for all that you accomplished for this community in 2010.

By answering the call to "Give. Advocate. Volunteer. LIVE UNITED," you truly made this a landmark year for United Way as we work to advance the common good in Greenville County.

Give.
The 2010 community campaign was one we'll never forget. The community's generosity and shared commitment to making this a better place for us all produced a record-breaking campaign total of more than $14.7 million. This tremendous effort will power our programs and initiatives to future success.

Advocate.
You stood up and raised your voice to help United Way's public policy agenda earn some legislative wins in 2010, including the long-awaited increase of South Carolina's cigarette tax, which will improve both the physical and fiscal health of our state.

Volunteer.
The January merger with Hands On Greenville strengthened our ability to impact lives in the community by linking people with rewarding, year-round volunteer opportunities. Five months after the merger, the community responded in record numbers once again, this time for our annual Hands On Greenville (HOG) Day.

Other United Way Highlights in 2010:
· Funding grants awarded to 86 local programs
· School Tools project provides supplies to 3,000 students
· AmeriCorps grant helps reach 3,500 more people
· Women's Leadership awards first five scholarships
· Faith-Based Roundtable unites for children's issue

On behalf of the board of trustees, I thank you for all you've done in 2010, and wish you a happy and healthy 2011.

-- Margaret Clark

Chair, United Way Board of Trustees

New grant to help Greenville County families achieve financial stability
Low-income individuals and families will have expanded access to a program offering opportunities to build financial stability thanks to a new $600,000 federal grant secured by United Way of Greenville County.

The Assets for Independence Grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families uses Individual Development Accounts, or IDAs, to help people move toward greater self-sufficiency by accumulating savings and purchasing long-term assets.

Under the program, the Greenville County IDA Network will provide a 3-to-1 savings match to help participants save towards the purchase of a home, post-secondary education and training, or small business start-ups or expansion.

In addition to the AmeriCorps grant announced in August, the Assets for Independence grant is another way United Way of Greenville County is increasing its impact in the community by leveraging donor contributions to secure additional financial resources.

To participate, call 2-1-1 or contact the Greenville Housing Fund directly at 854-235-6331.
