Welcome to Women's Leadership
Mary JeffreyWe thank you so much for your generous gift to United Way to help improve lives and bring about deep, meaningful change in our community. It's going to be a great year, filled with exciting opportunities for networking and fellowship, as well the chance to work on some important initiatives to impact lives here in Greenville County.
It's wonderful to have so many new and returning members join us in 2010. As the new chair and vice chair, Michelle DeLuca Yarbrough and I are looking forward to working with you to help build on the past successes of Women's Leadership.
As you know, Women's Leadership is about so much more than just financial philanthropy, and we hope you'll join us in seeking additional ways to get involved through volunteer and advocacy opportunities. We have some great things planned, and of course, we hope that all of you will be with us this summer at the Carolina First Center for our 12th annual Women Make a Difference, "Wear One, Bring One" luncheon. More details on that will follow later this year.
Thank you again for your support and generosity.
-- Mary Jeffrey, Chair

New Member Event

New members and old friends meet for first WL event of 2010

Women's Leadership kicked off the new year in style during the annual New Member Celebration Feb. 9th.
The event, held at Zen in downtown Greenville, was in honor of the 297 women who joined Women's Leadership this year. More than 130 new and returning members attended the celebration.
While renewing old friendships and making new ones, members heard what's on tap for Women's Leadership in 2010, including an update on the progress of WL's Jobs to Careers - Women Helping Women Scholarship program.

Women's Leadership New Member Spotlight: Carol Moore
Carol Moore, senior VP and assistant general counsel with Resurgent Capital in Greenville, is one of Women's Leadership's newest members. Here's a little more about Carol:

Where were you born and raised?Carol Moore  I've had the opportunity to live in a number of cities. I was born in New Haven, CT, where my parents were in graduate school. We then moved to Philadelphia and lived there until I was 12. Next it was on to Los Angeles for junior and senior high school, Boston for college and law school and back to Southern California until we made the move to Greenville.

What led you to make Greenville County your home?
If someone had asked me randomly about moving from "Surf City, USA" to the Upstate, I likely would have assured them that such a thing would never happen. However, when I had the opportunity to look at coming to Greenville to join Resurgent, I was surprised to find such a livable, inviting city. Greenville struck me as a great blend of many of the cultural advantages of larger cities (including lots of wonderful places to eat!), without the traffic, congestion and high cost of living that larger cities typically have. I've found that "Southern Hospitality" is a real thing, and people here will go out of their way to help you. Once I got a chance to see the area and meet some people, it was a pretty easy choice to make.

Why did you choose to join Women's Leadership and support your community through United Way?  Resurgent is the first company I've worked at that has given me the opportunity to participate in United Way giving. I was so impressed with the breadth of United Way's reach in the community and the incredible number of programs it supports. I am particularly proud to be part of Women's Leadership, because I believe that women who have achieved success have a special obligation to reach out to bring others along.

Is there a particular United Way program or partner agency you feel strongly about? If so, why?  I'm still learning about the many programs United Way is involved in. I am particularly interested in programs that impact children and literacy.

Besides your financial contribution, are there other ways you hope to get involved in the community through Women's Leadership?  I hope to have the opportunity to be involved directly through hands on volunteer activities, especially where I can get my teenagers involved as well.

Your dollars at work
Our signature project, the Jobs to Careers - Women Helping Women Scholarship program, is up and running. Thanks to your efforts, one local woman is getting the support she needs as she pursues an associate degree in nursing from Greenville Technical College. Our recipient started classes in January and is on her way to fulfilling her dreams. We will continue to update you on her progress.
As a result of the generosity and caring spirit of women during the 2009 campaign, we are currently interviewing other candidates to receive scholarships from the pool of approximately $35,000 WL has designated this year to fund the program.
