Aesthetic & Wellness Newsletter September 2009
Greetings!

Dr.Rosinska
I hope all of you   had a wonderful summer and enjoyed outdoor activities and spending time with your families. We've just entered a "Back to School" season and this is the time to start taking care of the sun damage which happens even in spite of using sunscreen. And let's not forget these barely visible fine laugh lines around the eyes. They don't have to be there!

If you have questions, need more information on procedures and treatments we offer or would like to make an appointment, please email us at appointment@askDrAnna.com, give us a call or simply stop by.

Sincerely,

Anna Rosinska MD

Selecting the Right Fish

Get Omega-3s but not Mercury

fishFish are the best source of omega-3 fatty acids - polyunsaturated fatty acids that are essential to human health. Omega-3's cannot be made by the body. That is why it is important to get sufficient amounts of them through  diet or supplements.

Omega-3s are found primarily in:
Fish and fish oils, including fish oil supplements
Plant-based oils, such as canola oil or flaxseed oil
Leafy green vegetables (spinach, kale, broccoli, seaweed)
Tofu and other forms of soybeans

 Some nuts, especially walnuts

How much do you need?
The American Heart Association recommends that people get their omega-3's from food sources, eating a variety of fish at least twice a week. Salmon, sardines, herring and trout are good options. You may consider taking a dietary fish oil supplement of about 1,000 to 2,000 mg per day.

Toxins in fish
Some fish are high in mercury, a potent toxic element released from power plants, mining and other industrial activities that is of particular risk to young children and pregnant women.
When people ingest mercury, it affects the nervous system and the developing brain. Mercury accumulates in fish so that, in general, small fish that eat insects have the lowest mercury levels, while large predator fish that eat small fish have the highest mercury levels. Mercury is present in all parts of fish and cannot be removed by cooking or cleaning them.
PCBs are another pollutant found in fish, despite the fact that production of PCBs was banned decades ago. These chemicals are also linked to learning and memory problems in children, and to heart problems and possibly cancer in adults. PCBs mainly accumulate in the fatty parts of fish, so you can minimize your exposure by trimming off the skin and fatty parts of the fish before cooking.

Which fish to choose?

Best choices: (high omega-3s, low mercury) salmon, oysters, sardines, trout, Atlantic or Pacific mackerel (but not king mackerel), shrimp, clams, tilapia, flounder, sole, crab, catfish, whitefish, scallops, perch, herring.

Caution: lobster, halibut, mahi-mahi, any kind of tuna.

Fall is the best time for PhotoFacial
Repair post-summer sun damage

pretty woman's facePhotoFacial is a new, non-invasive approach to skin rejuvenation. The procedure offers the advantage of improving skin tone and surface imperfections associated with aging and photodamage.

PhotoFacial is ideal for any part of your face, neck and dcollet with skin redness, telangiectasia (tiny veins) or brown spots. Light (low contrast) brown spots, which were previously difficult to resolve, respond very well to treatment.

What do treatments feel like?
When the pulse of light is delivered, patients will experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. Gel is recommended to cool the skin before vascular treatments. Anesthesia or pain medicine is typically not required.

How long with the treatments take?
Treatment time depends on the area of the body being treated. However, most treatments should take less than one hour.

How many treatments will I need?
One to three treatments are usually sufficient to see results. Additional treatments may be recommended, especially for excessively sundamaged skin.

What happens after the treatment?
Immediately following treatment, brown spots will start to darken and your skin may appear slightly red. The treated area may be mildly swollen. This typically lasts a few hours and possibly a day or longer. Make-up can be applied to cover the redness.

Are you sensitive to gluten?
Another reason for Food Allergy testing.
Gluten
Celiac disease (or gluten intolerance disease) doesn't just cause gas, cramps and bloating. It also interferes with the body's absorption of nutrients, depriving the brain and other organs of vital nourishment. This can lead to anemia, osteoporosis, cancer and other illnesses. The disease can also manifest itself as muscle cramps, mouth sores, joint pain or depression.

Celiac disease is a digestive disorder that damages the small intestine and hinders the absorption of nutrients from food. People with the health condition cannot tolerate a protein called gluten, which is found in anything made with wheat, rye, or barley. Consuming bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust and many other foods can trigger an immune reaction in the small intestine and elsewhere, leading to intermittent diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating as well joint pain and skin rash.

Celiac disease is diagnosed more often as it becomes better recognized by the medical community. At least 2 million Americans have celiac disease.

Celiac disease can be difficult to diagnose, as it mimics many other conditions including Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome. It can appear simply as an anemia or osteoporosis, and has even been associated with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Although the condition has no cure, controlling celiac disease is possible by following a life-long, gluten-free diet.

A Nose Job without Surgery

Crooked nose? A small dent that bothers you? An unwanted hump on the bridge of your nose?

All these can be corrected with simple injections of a dermal filler. Radiesse, a thick paste consistency filler, has proved to be the ideal substance to correct many of the minor deformities that exist either genetically or as a result of an accident or surgical procedure.

 ElastiDerm

Today's Rhinoplasty
("5 Minute Nose Job") is typically performed for appearance improvement and often the corrections desired are fairly subtle.

Surgical correction of nose misalignment, indentations or imbalance is expensive, very uncomfortable and many times takes up to a year before the final results are seen.

How does a non-surgical rhinoplasty work?
Dr. Rosinska is able to make these corrections, which last up to 2 years, by injecting Radiesse and then molding it to create the appearance of a straighter nose, to lessen an obvious hump on the bridge of the nose, to fill small indentations and to balance a nose that is visually thicker on one side than the other.

Cost:
due to small amount of filler required is
usually
 $ 150.00-200.00

Shortage of Thyroid Medication

As many of you know, there has been a nationwide shortage of Armour Thyroid and we had to convert many of our patients to Nature Thyroid.  In the majority of cases, there should be no problem with this but there are some individuals who will feel better on slightly higher dose.  If you notice a difference, please let us know.

Also, we have been informed that Armour Thyroid has gone through a reformulation process. The active ingredients HAVE NOT been changed, but they have changed some of the fillers. So if you notice that some of your thyroid symptoms are back (such as fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, constipation, etc.) please let us know so we can possibly change you to a different form of thyroid medication.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call our office at 432-688-1900.
