Sun Spots can be Everywhere
Even on the Neck and Chest |

Most cases of discoloration, age spots and freckles that appear on the chest are the result of repeated sun exposure. To eliminate their appearance, you may want to look into a series of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or laser treatments.
Additionally, some women experience a leathery texture and crinkly appearance on their chests due to the delayed effects of sun damage, but ablative and non-ablative fractionated laser treatments can refine skin texture, especially when used in combination.
Non-ablative laser treatments typically require no downtime, though you can expect some redness and swelling for a few days. Ablative laser treatments are not downtime-free, but they are very effective in achieving a visible improvement in the skin.
Remember, daily sunscreen use is imperative to maintain results and prevent further damage. Glycolic peels are also useful.

How to buy Sunscreen
...and apply correctly |
When buying a sunscreen, look on the label to see how much protection in a form of SPF you will get. Keep in mind that SPF only results in protection from UVB but not from UVA. Remember that no sunscreen will stop 100% of UVB, but if it is applied properly, you can depend on an SPF 15 filtering out 93% of UVB, while SPF 30 filters out 97%, but even a high SPF 50 will filter out only 98%.
SPF of 30 is not twice as protective as a SPF of 15.
In reality, no matter what sunscreen you use, some sun radiation still gets through to the skin. That is why sunscreen is only a part of a comprehensive sun protection program, along with seeking the shade between high sun intensity times of day and wearing sun-protective clothing, including UV-blocking sunglasses.
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying at least 2 tablespoons of sunscreen to exposed areas 30 minutes before sun exposure, and reapplying it every two hours or immediately after excessive sweating or swimming. At times, if you want to increase the protection, just do a double application after the first application is dry.

May is a "Better Sleep" Awareness Month |

M elatonin is a hormone produced in the brain by the pineal gland from the amino acid tryptophan and is responsible for controlling our sleep pattern. (Have you ever got sleepy after Thanksgiving dinner? If so, it's because turkey contains high amounts of tryptophan). The production of melatonin is stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light. Levels of melatonin in the blood are highest prior to bedtime.
Melatonin supplements have been used for a variety of medical conditions, most notably for disorders related to sleep, jetlag, ADHD, cancer treatment, chemotherapy side effects, as an potent antioxidant, smoking cessation, depression, bipolar disorder, frequent urination at night and migraine prevention.
Dosage: Women 3-6 mg before bedtime, Men 6-12 mg.

Diagnose Your Sleep Problems
Just a simple test |
It's called a NeuroSLP Profile and measures levels of hormones and neurotransmitters in the brain, which are responsible for quality and quantity of sleep.
It is a noninvasive night-time test that measures salivary hormones & urinary neurotransmitters related to sleep. This profile is recommended for all individuals experiencing difficulty falling asleep, difficulty maintaining sleep or restless sleep.
Let us know if you don't sleep well and we'll order the test for you.

Tanning Beds and Melanoma |
UVA radiation makes up most of the radiation in tanning beds, which is associated with malignant melanoma, the most deadly form of all cancers. People who visit a tanning salon at least once a month are 55% more likely to develop melanoma than those who don't, especially if they've done so before age 30.

Vitamin deficiency can affect the scalp |

C certain scalp problems may point us to specific nutrient deficiencies.
If you suffer from:
Dry hair, you may have Omega-3 fatty acid (fish oil) deficiency. Premature graying -Pantothenic acid (B5) deficiency. Hair loss - Folic acid, B5, B6, B-complex, and Omega-3 deficiencies. Vitamin A toxicity also causes hair loss. Dandruff -Deficiencies in Omega-3, antioxidants (selenium especially), B6 or B-complex. May also indicate low stomach acid.

Facts about Food Cravings |
1. Evolution predisposes the body to crave high fat, high sugar foods.
When food was scarce, the body wanted food that was packed with calories or food that could be used quickly for energy. Pleasure chemicals, like dopamine, are released in your brain when you eat high fat, high sugar foods. This is why eating chocolate and ice cream actually "feels good."
2. A craving for sweets may indicate a lack of minerals in the body. Are you craving sweets all the time? Your body may be looking for more minerals. If sweet cravings are especially difficult for you, try adding trace minerals to your diet and see what happens.
3. People with an overgrowth of yeast in their intestines often crave sugar. Yeast that live in the intestines feed off simple sugars and an acid environment. Eliminating sugar and fruit from the diet and doing an occasional colon cleanse may help to eradicate yeast.
4.Craving salty foods may indicate low adrenal gland function or low thyroid function.
Salt regulates water retention in the body through the kidneys and adrenal glands. It is high in iodine, which is a mineral needed for thyroid function If you are craving salt, it may be your body asking for more iodine or potassium, or pointing to a fluid imbalance. |
