 According to a recent report, Americans get an average of 22% of their daily calories from beverages. Since most beverages don't fill us up the way food does, it's easy to consume a lot of calories in liquid form and not even realize it.
Water - 0 calories
Glass of tea with no sugar, honey or milk - 0 calories
Glass of herbal tea -2 calories
Smoothies- 150-500 calories based on content
Cup of whole milk- 146 calories
Juice- 50 to 160 calories, depending on the juice
Coffee- 2 calories per cup
Decaff - same as regular coffee
Soda- 150 calories per 12-ounce can

Tired after Thanksgiving Dinner?
Turkey contains L-tryptophan, an essential amino acid with a documented sleep inducing effect. L-tryptophan is used in the body to produce the B-vitamin, niacin. Tryptophan is also metabolized into serotonin and melatonin, neurotransmitters that exert a calming effect and improve sleep.

Navigating the Holiday Table |
First, remember to eat your protein first. Eating your turkey before the veggies will help to prevent any rises in blood sugar and also help to curb your appetite.
When it comes to purchasing a turkey, look for free range birds that are fed organic vegetarian diets, contain no antibiotics or growth hormones.
Buy organic vegetables and eat the skins - the greatest concentration of nutrients and fiber are in the skin or right beneath the skin.
Substitute baked organic whole sweet potatoes for regular potatoes. Bake and serve hot with the skin for high fiber.
Sprinkle cinnamon on winter squash and sweet potatoes. Cinnamon helps to stabilize blood sugar and adds great flavor. Liberal use of cinnamon will help offset the high glycemic effects of that holiday slice of pumpkin or pecan pie.
Make your pie crust flourless - use ground nuts and real butter - stay away from shortening which contains dangerous trans fats.
Try adding a little finely minced garlic to freshly steamed and mashed turnips and squash - adds delicious flavor and anti-oxidant health benefits.
Enjoy mixed nuts in the shell as opposed to salted, canned varieties.
When baking pies, choose raw, unfiltered dark honey in place of cane sugar.
It is not realistic to think that we can totally avoid the occasional mouth watering treat, but a helpful strategy is to choose healthy appetizers first.
