We hope everyone had a joyous and safe New Year's celebration. We certainly did, holding our first ever New Year's Eve Wine Dinner here at the Market's new dining room. Our family style seating for our wine dinners creates a wonderful atmosphere of lively conversation and new found friendships. Accolades abounded on the food and the wine, but the most significant compliment was on our most recent change (our Wine Shop Dining Room), and how we're always coming up with something new. Truth be told, we have evolved from a retail food/grocery market to a market/restaurant more by necessity than anything else.
When we opened almost four years ago, we were prepared to offer not only great tasting foods from our kitchen, but also plenty of specialty & organic grocery items representing the best quality in various commodities. Trying to appeal to a broader customer base, we added many everyday items & brands the following year at prices competitive with big grocery stores, even selling milk for less than the big guys. But still we found we could not compete as a grocery store. It was evident what draws people to us -the things that come from our kitchen. So it was natural for us to apply for seating that was not allowed when we opened, and most recently an official permit as a restaurant.
Our second year also brought with it our second location, Coastal Provisions Deli in the Waterfront Shops, a small place with a great view and a good place to offer our great sandwich menu. Our third year brought the fortuitous circumstances resulting in the opening of Coastal Cravings in Duck, though be it mid-way through the year. Such rapid growth might have lead some to believe that we're the new axis of evil bent on world domination (or sandbar domination). But we can assure you our motives are much less sinister: to simply provide for our two families by sharing our passion for great food.
So what does 2010 have in store for CPM? First, we hope to establish our Wine Shop Cafe as the great new dining spot this Winter where you can enjoy a menu of really good food and wine at very reasonable prices. We're thrilled with the response so far to the food and the comfortable atmosphere we've created within the Market at night. Our Coastal Cravings concept is sure to evolve, and greater things are expected with full marketing support that was missed this past year due to a mid-season opening. Our catering business is expected to grow again this year, especially with continued recognition like the recent Readers Choice Best Caterer Award from The Bride's Book magazine. Scott & Nina's event house will certainly be part of our catering growth this year as well. 2010 will also be an important year with decisions on lease renewals. The commercial market has changed tremendously the past few years, and new/different locations have certainly been discussed.
One thing that will never change is our goal to share great food with you, and our appreciation of your continued support. Thank you, and have a great 2010! |

| Bloggers Welcome |
|
While we consider ourselves fairly tech-savvy, running the multiple operations of Coastal Provisions leaves little time to keep our website as current as we should, keep regular posts on our Facebook page, or even getting as many eNewsletters out as we'd like. Don't even think that we're texting on our phones, or are blogging throughout the day. Yet the blogosphere has a certain allure for the business owner. The anonymity of made-up usernames seems to allow for a level of communication stripped of any filtering mechanisms, so you really get a read on what's on people's minds. Recently, we've been researching blogs and even set up a Google search notification for any blogs that mention us. If nothing else, we found out that there may be some setting the record straight to be done, so here it is:
- We are reopening the Deli at the Waterfront Shops in the Spring -date to be determined.
- Prior to opening Coastal Provisions, we worked for Sutton Place Gourmet (now Balducci's) in the DC area, but never had any ownership interest.
- We don't currently blog, but when we do, it will be through our own name and likely our own site.
But all that said, blog all you want. It does nothing but help! | |
| Big Burger Special Is a Hit! |
Our Wednesday Big Burger Special has really taken off the past couple weeks, winning new converts each week who are discovering the difference 'real' fresh ground beef makes. As a chef for more than two decades, I made the decision long ago that buying ground beef from someone else is just not an option for several reasons: 1) it's almost always been frozen, which makes for drier beef, 2) the texture is too fine and mealy, and 3) you don't know what's in it, and need to cook it well done to ensure safe eating. So we insist on nothing but grinding it fresh from prime natural cuts so you can enjoy even the rarest burger with confidence.
So we set out to offer the biggest, best burger around at a fair price. Recognizing quickly that not everyone was up to the big 12oz burger (having split several the first two weeks), we are now offering the 6oz burger as well. Either way, still the best burger you'll likely find, every Wednesday at the Market in Southern Shores:
- BIG 12oz Natural Prime Burger with fries and fixins bar $9.99
- 6oz Natural Prime Burger with fries and fixins bar $6.99
