November 2011 - Issue 11

Dear EWN Members & Friends:

Hopefully, you are finally back up "on the grid" after the late October snowstorm which walloped our area.

As we head into the holidays, I'm so aware of how fast time is passing by.  EWN's November events included an AfterHours networking evening on November 1 at the 55 Degrees Wine Bar in Fairfield.  Tasty hors d'oeuvres and relaxed mingling was enjoyed by all and it was great to see some new faces in attendance for their first EWN event.  Our November 10 luncheon featured Karen Graves, founder of Your Sales Fix, who provided us with great tips on how each of us can reduce our "sales reluctance", wherever we now find ourselves on the "sales comfort" continuum.

Don't miss our December 8 Luncheon!

Come let Maurice "Mo" Segall and Donna M. Jackson help you evaluate the pros and cons of becoming a 503(c)(3) tax-exempt charity and whether it's the right move for you and your business.  "Mo" will discuss what you should be thinking about in setting up a non-profit business. Donna's personal story of triumph and resilience will inspire all. Stay tuned for messages on how you can display some holiday spirit in helping Emerge to deliver much-needed holiday cheer to the families this organization helps.

Enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday with you and yours...a time to slow down and be grateful for everything that is right in your world...right in the here and now.

Best,

Anne Wilkins

EWN President

Is Becoming a Tax-Exempt Charity the Right Step For You?

In December, EWN will welcome Maurice "Mo" Segall, an attorney from The Pro Bono Partnership and Donna M. Jackson, a domestic violence survivor and Co-Founder of Emerge, Inc. a Fairfield County non-profit organization which works to end the cycle of domestic violence.

Mo Segall, Director of the New York and Fairfield County Programs for The Pro Bono Partnership, will help you determine if becoming a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charity is the best choice for your business organization. Mo will discuss the pros and cons of forming a nonprofit organization, the benefits and responsibilities of being incorporated and tax-exempt, the alternatives to filing for tax exemption and the responsibilities of a nonprofit board.

Donna M. Jackson, a domestic violence survivor and Co-Founder of Emerge, Inc. will share her personal story of how she left an abusive marriage and established Emerge, Inc., a non-profit organization based in Fairfield County providing transitional and permanent housing and support services to women and children who are homeless survivors of domestic violence.

As part of December's luncheon, EWN will be supporting Donna's work. As Emerge, Inc.'s mission so closely mirrors EWN's mission of women supporting each other, attendees will be invited to support Emerge by making a financial contribution, purchasing gift cards or holiday gifts for Emerge's families in celebration of the holiday season. Details will be sent via e-mail before the event and posted on EWN's website.
