EWN

APRIL 2011

Issue: 4

Dear EWN Members & Friends:

After a whirlwind March Madness month, April will be relatively quiet for EWN.  Unfortunately, our 4/21 luncheon "Ignite Conversation Around Your Brand: Developing a Compelling Blog" had to be canceled by the speakers owing to some serious and unfortunate circumstances.  We hope to reschedule this topic very soon.

With this lull in activity, I hope you will take a moment to consider your last or next EWN event and all that goes into getting each one organized.  How do those purple flowers get on the tables?  How much work is it to have all the name tags prepared?  Who is lining up the speakers and what's involved?  We have a small but outstanding group of women working hard to propel EWN into its 30th anniversary year which begins in Fall of 2011 - and we need some more help.  It's an exciting year to get involved - and we are looking for a "few good women" willing to roll up their sleeves, get down in the nitty gritty, and make some good friends along the way.  Time is running short though.  Please raise your hand and get involved on the Board or a Committee by contacting me or Rita Smircich before April 22nd.

With Spring, there is much to look forward to:

  • Join fellow entrepreneurs and friends for uplifting good cheer, networking and a celebration of Spring at our casual AfterHours gathering on 4/27;
  • Consider this - are the legends of King Arthur and the Round Table applicable to the challenges in your business today?  Come hear how history has a way of repeating itself with some interesting and relevant stories at our 5/5 luncheon;
  • Blast yourself back into the future with a Morning Workshop titled "Marketing Using Google AdWords and Analytics" on 5/16; and
  • Mark your calendars now for EWN's Grand Networking Event - the grand finale of a great EWN year on June 6.

 Happy April!

Camelot, Inc.: Leadership and Management Insights
from King Arthur and the Round Table

What can an ancient king tell us about modern business issues and leadership practices? As it turns out, a lot! Camelot, Inc. is an unprecedented examination of Arthur's life and illuminates many of today's most pressing leadership challenges.  These include training and mentoring; developing coherent plans and proposals; building internal and external advocacy; performing effective negotiation, team building; innovation, and flexibility; and moving from vision to execution. It's beyond "conventional wisdom" - it's "Camelot wisdom."

"Arthur and his court sometimes planned and sometimes bumbled, sometimes succeeded and sometimes failed, in ways very similar to what we see today in modern organizations and institutions," said Dr. Oestreicher. "Camelot, Inc. isn't a history lesson, but it uses history to illustrate the dos and don'ts critical to our success as learners and leaders."

Paul Oestreicher is a noted communications expert, educator, entrepreneur and inventor. A scientist by training, he has held executive positions in public affairs and communications at major health care companies and public relations agencies.  Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor at New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Last year he launched TagsMania, LLC (www.tagsmania.com), fun and distinctive toys for babies and toddlers created by his own designs.

The Norwalk Inn

Keynote Speaker:  Kim Bensen of
Kim Bensen Enterprises

Would you risk your entire savings and start your own company in this economy? That is what Kim Bensen did! And she did it after losing more than 200 pounds! After her story hit the mass media, many people were sending Kim e-mails asking how she lost the weight, what kept her focused, and how she managed the willpower to stay 'with it' this time. Soon she had penned a cookbook and she and her husband used $20,000 as seed money to start their own weight-loss company. Before long Random House came knocking and made a preemptive offer on her book, Finally Thin.

Today, she has 10 employees devoted to helping people lose weight. Her line of fresh bagels, Kim's Light Bagels, are available in grocery stores across New England. And now she's entering the snack food industry with Kim's Light Bagel Chips. Her company sends a weekly e-newsletter to over 25,000 subscribers, she holds in-person meetings in Shelton, CT and will soon be opening a new 12,000 square foot facility, the Kim Bensen Weight Loss Center. She also offers online subscriptions to her LIVE WITH KIM weight loss meetings which has members from all 50 states.

Kim has been featured on the Dr. Oz Show, Nightline, the cover of Prevention, Women's World, Connecticut Magazine, MSNBC Today Show, Better TV, Good Morning America, Extra, and will be in All You magazine this July.
