and the Rev. Dr. William O. Gafkjen, bishop of the Indiana-Kentucky Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will celebrate the establishment of a new ELCA worshiping community at Christ Episcopal Church in Elizabethtown with a service of healing and hope on Tuesday, January 25. Held on the last day of the worldwide observance of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, the service will begin at 6 p.m. (EST) at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 Poplar Ave., in downtown Elizabethtown. Service to honor those affected by violence
The congregation of Christ Church Cathedral, which began a ministry of prayer for those affected by violence in metropolitan Louisville last year, will have a special service of remembrance at 4 p.m. Sunday, January 30. "The cathedral wanted to bear witness to and pray for those affected by violence, especially homicides, in our city," cathedral Dean Mark Bourlakas said. "We keep track of murders that, unfortunately, happen almost every week. We had 62 murders last year, and three already this year." Read more

Mark your calendars! The Kentucky branch of Interfaith Power and Light (KIPL) is joining with the national organization in inviting faith leaders to give sermons, share reflections and host discussions or other events on global warming the weekend of February 11-13, 2011. Read more

St. Francis lecture series on forgiveness

Spiritual author and retreat leader Paula Huston will present a series of lectures on forgiveness next month at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church, Harrods Creek. Author of the book Forgiveness: Following Jesus into Radical Loving (Paraclete Press, 2008), Huston, a Camaldolese Benedictine oblate, will guide participants through the principals of forgiveness in three two-hour sessions and one one-hour workshop. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd training St. Andrew's Episcopal Church is hosting a first-level course to train adults interested in the Montessori-based formation program for children Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. The course, for teachers who work with children ages 3-6, will be offered on five weekends in February, March, May, June and August. Godly Play core training available
Christian educators, clergy members and volunteers will have an opportunity to receive Godly Play training at a weekend workshop hosted by Christ Episcopal Church in Bowling Green next month.
The Rev. Lois Howard and Mary Gardener White, Godly Play trainers, will offer the foundation's core training Feb. 10-12, 2011. They will lead the group through a teacher accreditation for the Montessori-based curriculum. Read more

The conference was held Monday, January 17, through Friday, January 21 at the Roslyn Conference Center in Richmond, Va. Read more

Robert Thompson to be ordained priest
The Rev. Robert Thompson, a deacon at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Anchorage, will be ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, Feb. 5. The Rt. Rev. W. Michie Klusmeyer, the bishop of West Virginia, will preside over the service, which begins at 4 p.m. (EST)at St. Luke's, 1206 Maple Lane. Clergy are to wear white stoles.

Interfaith Paths to Peace birthdays
Interfaith Paths to Peace and its executive director are celebrating birthdays next month. The interfaith organization marks its 15th year; Executive Director Terry Taylor, his 60th birthday.
Come celebrate with them at Diocesan House, 425 S. Second St., Louisville, between 2 and 5 p.m. (EST) Sunday, Feb. 6, and enjoy international foods, music, stories, pictures and a video of IPP events.

Presiding bishop asks President Obama to 'reignite' the Middle East peace process [The Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs] In a January 16 letter to President Barack Obama, Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori addresses a United Nations resolution concerning Middle East peace. She writes, "It is imperative that the United States take bold and decisive action to reinvigorate the stalled peace process" in the Middle East.
The presiding bishop asserts "the appropriate response of the United States government to the present efforts in the Security Council is to work urgently to reignite a negotiations process that can produce immediate and sustainable steps toward a just, comprehensive and lasting peace." Read more
Former PB visiting scholar at VTS [VTS Press Release] The Most Rev. Frank Griswold, former presiding bishop and primate of The Episcopal Church, is serving as a visiting scholar in residence at Virginia Theological Seminary. He is teaching two January term courses, "The Ignation Way" and "The Anglican Spiritual Tradition," and a spring quarter course entitled "Symbol, Sign and Sacrament."

Applications accepted for fellowships
Applications are now being taken for the Episcopal Church Foundation's Fellowship Partners Program. The application deadline is March 15, 2011.
ECF awards fellowships for both academic and transformational ministries and enables fellows to share their knowledge, experience and best practices with the wider Church in practical ways. The program places emphasis on partnerships that will have an important impact in their local communities and beyond. Both lay and clergy are invited to apply. Read more
