A prayer request from the bishop

| | World Council of Churches |
Bishop Terry Allen White has requested that the congregations in our diocese join with other Episcopal and Evangelical Lutheran churches in commemorating the 10th anniversary of our denominations' full communion.
To that end, Prayers of the People have been developed for use by churches in both denominations, available through The Episcopal Church Office of Public Affairs, and Bishop White is encouraging our churches to participate in the commemoration this weekend or during the week of Christian Unity, which begins January 18.

Another prayer request for The Sudan and its People The members of Resurrection Church, who include members of the Sudanese Community in Louisville, are asking the churches in our diocese to pray for The Sudan and its people, who are about to decide in a referendum whether to divide the African nation. "The Sudan and the people of Sudan need our prayer," the Rev. Suzanne Warner said in an email sent to the diocese's clergy. "Most of the Louisville Sudanese Community, registered to vote, will go to Tennessee on Sunday, where there is the closest voting station."
She offered the following prayer for Sudan: We pray for the people of Sudan, especially on Sunday, January 9, 2011, the day marking the national referendum. Gracious Savior stand with them as they face violence, displacement, and death. Comfort those who grieve. May Your Spirit guide those who work for peace, those who seek to implement peace agreements and those who make decisions for the future of this great nation and its people. May the killing and violence stop. May your peace with justice prevail. May those who hunger be fed. Lord, touch the hearts and minds of the nations of the world so that they will respond with wisdom and compassion. [Editor's note: See below for related stories from Episcopal News Service]

[Episcopal News Service] In a Jan. 6 interview, Sudanese Bishop Joseph Garang of the Diocese of Renk speaks with ENS editor and international correspondent Matthew Davies about the upcoming referendum on independence, the importance of international partnerships, and the church's role in ensuring peace and stability in the region.
The referendum is the final provision in Sudan's Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which in 2005 brought to an end the decades-long civil conflict that claimed more than 2 million lives and displaced millions more. Should southerners vote to secede from the north in the referendum vote, which commences on Jan. 9 and runs through Jan. 15, millions of refugees are expected to return to the south from the north.
