Electing convention next week

Episcopalians from across the western half of Kentucky will

elect a new bishop on June 5 at a  special convention at Christ Church Cathedral, Louisville. The election is being held to replace the Rt. Rev. Edwin F. "Ted" Gulick, who is retiring as the seventh Bishop of Kentucky.  Bishop Gulick has served the diocese as bishop since 1994.

For details about the electing convention and the search for a new bishop, including profiles of and written reflections by the nominees, visit the Bishop Search and Transition Committee website.

Videos of the four nominees' are available here.  The videos were recorded May 14 when the nominees visited the diocese earlier this month and participated in walkabouts in Louisville and Hopkinsville. Videotaped was the session held in Bishop's Hall at the cathedral.

"It's our congregation's feast day, and we wanted to celebrate in a big way," said the Rev. Karl Lusk, rector of the Church of the Ascension, Bardstown. "We've grown remarkably in the last eight months, not only in number, about 28 people, but in the way we relate to each other as a faith community," he added.

In memoriam
May the light shine perpetual upon them

The Hon. Walter A. Baker
Funeral services for Walter Baker, the Diocese of Kentucky's vice chancellor, will be at 11 a.m. (CT) Saturday, May 29, at the First Christian Church, 1100 N. Ray St., in Glasgow. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. (CT) Friday, May 28, at A.F. Crow and Son Funeral Home, 201 East Washington St., Glasgow.

Baker was well known and much respected throughout  Kentucky and beyond, described in an editorial by The Courier-Journal as the Henry Clay of our time.  A former state senator and state Supreme Court justice, Baker died Monday at his home in Glasgow after fighting cancer for several months.  He was 73.  Read more

The Rev. Mainert J. Peterson
Funeral services for the Rev. Mainert Jordon Peterson, 92, will be at 4 p.m. (ET) Saturday, May 29, at St. Luke's Chapel, 7504 Westport Road, Louisville.  Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. (ET), and a reception will follow the service. Peterson died Thursday, May 20, at the Episcopal Church Home in Louisville.

Peterson, rector of St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Louisville from 1969 until his retirement in 1982, served for 20 years in Mexico and Central America and was featured, along with his wife Virginia, in the movie, "Challenge in the Sun," a film detailing the extent of the Episcopal Church missions in Central America.  Read more
Bishop-Elect James "Jay" Magness receives required consents
 

[May 27, 2010] The Office of Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has announced that Bishop-Elect James "Jay" Magness as Bishop Suffragan for Federal Ministries has received the required majority of consents in the canonical consent process.

His consecration is set for June 19 at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Read more

Interfaith Memorial Day service will feature youth at cathedral

With Karen and Burmese dancers, readings and prayers from Hindu, Baha'i and Muslim children, and music by recording artist Andrea Davidson, Interfaith Paths to Peace, in cooperation with a number of local groups, will host a unique Interfaith Memorial Day Service.

The service, which will begin at 11 a.m. (ET) on Monday, May 31,  is unique because it honors not only military dead but also civilian dead in all U.S. wars. The cathedral is located at 421 S. Second St., Louisville.

Inspiring parish vitality is focus of leadership conference

The Province IV Congregational Development & Evangelism network is preparing for the second of three identical conferences on building leaders (lay and clergy) in order to inspire parish vitality. 

The next conference will be June 9-11 at Kanuga Conference Center, near Hendersonville, N.C.

Haiti cathedral's murals could be resurrected, experts say

Haiti mural under repair[Episcopal News Service, May 27, 2010] Some of the world-famous murals that adorned the walls of the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti's Holy Trinity cathedral prior to the Jan. 12 earthquake, and gave Haitians of all faiths a vision of their place in the stories of the Bible, could be preserved and possibly even restored.

[Episcopal News Service, May 20, 2010] General Theological Seminary's Board of Trustees has agreed on a series of steps that they say will assure that the Manhattan-based school will continue "for the next several years."

Archbishop of Canterbury's Pentecost letter to the Anglican Communion

[ACNS, May 28, 2010] Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, in his Pentecost letter to the Anglican Communion, encourages Anglicans to pray for renewal in the Spirit and focus on the priority of mission, so that "we may indeed do what God asks of us and let all people know that new and forgiven life in Christ is possible."

ENGLAND: Bishops issue statement
on women in the episcopate


[Episcopal News Service, May 18, 2010] The House of Bishops of the Church of England has issued a statement in support of a committee report and draft legislation that could pave the way for women to be consecrated as bishops. The legislation - and its accompanying 142-page report - will be debated at the next session of General Synod, the church's main governing body, when it meets in July.
