The four nominees for the eighth bishop of the Diocese of Kentucky are arriving this afternoon (Thursday, May 13) for a four-day visit to introduce them and their wives to Kentucky Episcopalians. The nominees, pictured above from left to right, are the Rev. David Allen Boyd, the Very Rev. John Paul Downey, the Very Rev. W. Nicholas Knisely and the Very Rev. Terry Allen White.

The nominees have been invited to participate in two  "walkabouts," a traditional event in bishop searches providing an opportunity for the clergy and diocesan deputies participating in the election to meet, question and hear from the nominees before the electing convention meets.

Keeping camp and day programs safe

Safeguarding God's Children, a video-based training and education program to prevent and respond to child sexual abuse, has training modules, available online, for camp staff and volunteers involved in overnight and day camp programs.

"Keeping Your Camp Safe," introduced this year, is geared to train camp staffs  for overnight camps, and it is usually used in conjunction with two videos "Meet Sam" and "It Happened to Me."  Last year, "A Day at Camp" was produced for day camp and Vacation Bible school staffs.

To arrange for online training, contact the Rev. Canon Joan Smith at joan@episcopalky.org.

ENS weekly bulletin inserts
for May 23 feature Pentecost

What if the Holy Spirit answered our Pentecost prayers? In "Rushing winds, tongues of flame," the Episcopal News Service Weekly bulletin insert for May 23, the Day of Pentecost, the Rev. Tony Clavier asks that question, with thoughts on the perceived impropriety of the first disciples and the likely effect if Christians today really let the spirit of God transform their lives. Clavier is rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, La Porte, in the Diocese of Northern Indiana.

May 16, 2010 - Seventh Sunday of Easter
By the Rev. Dr. Frank Hegedus

There is a story or parable, variously ascribed to the wisdom traditions of Arab, Chinese, or rabbinic literature, which illustrates well "the changes and chances of this mortal life," as the Book of Common Prayer describes the vicissitudes, the ups and downs, of this world.

According to most versions, the story - no doubt apocryphal - goes like this: A farmer had a fine stallion that one day escaped and ran off. The farmer's neighbors commiserated with him. "What bad luck you have," they said sadly. But the farmer responded, "Who really knows? It could be bad. But it could also be good."

Displaced Episcopalians
worshipping together again

From Episcopal News Online

[Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth] The Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth announced May 11 that Episcopalians from St. Andrew's Episcopal Church are worshipping each Sunday evening at Trinity Episcopal Church. Provisional Bishop of Fort Worth C. Wallis Ohl is leading Evening Prayer from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer for the St. Andrew's congregation each Sunday; a service of Holy Communion will be held once a month.

"We are happy that these Episcopalians from St. Andrew's are able to worship together once again," Ohl said, adding that he authorized the use of the 1928 prayer book because "this is a community that needs to build from where they are. They are our sisters and brothers and we rejoice with them at their reunion in worship." Read more

The MDGs at 10 years old

By Alexander Baumgarten, May 11, 2010

[Episcopal News Service] This article first appeared in the Featured Voice section of the president of the House of Deputies website here.

One of the heroes of the Anglican Communion, Fr. Gideon Byamugisha, an HIV-positive priest in the Church of Uganda, asks us to imagine a world in 25 years that did not summon the moral and political will to eradicate extreme poverty and deadly disease. He speaks of those who will be "survivors" 25 years from now.   Read more
