Young adults to have central spot on convention agenda

Looking ahead to the special electing convention this June, Bishop Ted Gulick wants to insure that younger generations of Kentucky Episcopalians have a chance to share their hopes and dreams for the Episcopal Church and its leadership with the people who will be voting for the diocese's eighth bishop.

To that end, he has invited several leaders and participants in college and young adults' ministries in the diocese to join him for a panel discussion during this convention on Saturday morning, Feb. 27.

As if to signal its importance, the panel discussion, "Generation to Generation: Unique Voices & Different Accents," has a central place on the agenda for the second day of convention. Scheduled from 9:30-10:30 a.m. (CT) in Grace Church's parish hall, the session will follow morning prayer and the bishop's annual address and immediately precede the first business session.

Poster of Grace Church architectural detailsLetters of Grace

In keeping with Paducah's reputation as an up and coming, thriving, progressive fine arts center in the midwest, Paducah's Convention and Visitors Center has produced a poster sure to catch the attention and admiration of Episcopalians there next week. Titled "Letters of Grace," the poster, created by the center's Fowler Black, depicts the letters of the alphabet found within architectural and other physical elements of Grace Church.

"As long as I can remember, the features of Grace Episcopal Church have attracted my attention through beauty and respectful appreciation," Black said in an email note. "Capturing things visually that can become part of a story (just like a scrapbook would), is something I've come to appreciate as well.  This enjoyable photography project blends the beauty of the physical property and the capturing of a story."

Be sure to bring your wallet to convention. The posters and other items, including refrigerator magnets and individual 4 x 6 prints (great for spelling your name in a frame, says Black) will be on sale, and all proceeds will go to the church.

Planning a "green" convention

Having accepted the call from General Convention for Episcopalians and their churches to be good stewards of our world and its resources, Grace Church has applied an environmentally conscious approach to convention planning.  Their approach has produced some immediately useful results, some even promising to be fun for convention goers.

A reminder: Email your workshop preferences asap

If you are planning to attend a convention workshop, please email your  preferences to libby_wade@yahoo.com as soon as possible.  Doing so will enable your convention hosts to assign workshop rooms best suited to the anticipated participation. Not doing so, may mean sitting hunched up in a crowded room, if you can find a place to sit. The convention has several workshop offerings, any one of which could generate a crowd. A copy of the workshop schedule and descriptions may be found here.

Stewardship workshop details now available

The workshop, "Living our Faith: Stewardship in the 21st Century," will be an interactive dialogue with the Rev. Dr. Tim Mitchell, focusing on "best practices" for stewardship in your congregation. The topics covered will be those presented in this past year's TENS (The Episcopal Network for Stewardship) Conference, in which Mitchell participated. Topics will range from the general, "Stewardship & Giving: Increasing Financial Support in Your Church," to the specific, "Checklists for Your Pledge Committee." The workshop will be offered 1:30-2:45 p.m. (CT) Friday, Feb. 26, at Grace Church. It is one of 10 workshops offered Friday afternoon.

Getting to Center stage Friday night

If you are attending the convention banquet Friday night after the Seamen's Institute reception, you will not need to bring along a Google map, GPS or even a car to get there. Grace has arranged for the PATS (Paducah Area Transit System) Trolley to take people from the front door of the institute to the front door of the Carson Four Rivers Center.

Convention guests also should have no problem finding Center stage --  literally. Once inside, they will find another reception (with cash bar) in the lobby and Grace Church hosts on hand to escort them to the stage,  "a dramatic setting in which to enjoy each other's company," promises the Rev. Libby Wade, Grace Church's rector.  Deacon candidate Richard Paxton will be master of ceremonies for the banquet, which will include a brief welcome by Paducah Mayor Bill Paxton and the presentation of a Duke of Paducah certificate to our bishop.

In the meantime, while the adults are at the banquet, youth deputies will be treated to a pizza feast and an evening of bowling as they get to know each other under the supervision of Beth Bojarski, diocesan youth coordinator, and Stefan Jagoe, Grace Church's youth minister.

Clergy vestments for Holy Eucharist

For Friday's 5 p.m. Eucharist, the bishop requests that clergy wear the following vestments: those who are in procession should wear cassock, surplice and purple stole. Those who have been assigned to specific roles in the Eucharist are to wear an alb and purple stole.

Clergy are not expected to vest for the liturgy of morning prayer on Saturday.

Presiding Bishop issues challenge "to take on something new" in Lenten reflection
The Public Affairs Office of The Episcopal Church

"Take on something new" this Lent, Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori challenges in her Lenten video reflection.  Citing prayer, fasting and study as key elements for this penitential season, she notes, "Lent is a time to focus on what is important."

The Presiding Bishop's video Lenten reflection, taped at St. Mary The Virgin Episcopal Church in New York City, is available on the home page of The Episcopal Church website: www.episcopalchurch.org

In the liturgical calendar, Lent is the 40-day season leading up to Easter.  Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, this year February 17. Easter is Sunday, April 4.

Join the bishop for Lenten program

Bishop Ted Gulick will be leading a diocesan-wide Lenten program of catechesis at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Louisville, beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

The program, which help prepare those interested in confirmation, reception or reaffirmation, is open, however, to all who are interested in finding out more about your Episcopal Faith and its history.  This will be an opportunity to grow in understanding of your faith, deepen your commitment to Christ and visit with the bishop before his retirement in September.

The sessions will be held throughout Lent, beginning at 6:30 p.m. (ET) each Wednesday. St. Matthew's is located at 330 N. Hubbards Lane.

Graphic of a cross Psalms to be used to move hearts and minds at join Lenten retreat

The Psalms of Lament will be the text for a Lenten retreat planned and hosted by three Louisville Episcopal churches March 7-9 to help participants examine their own hearts during this season of "self-examination and repentance."

The retreat is hosted by Church of the Advent, St. Mark's and St. Andrew's Episcopal churches. As the retreat organizers note in their invitation, the poetry and imagery of the Psalms, especially the Psalms of Lament, can be an aid to self-examination. "In worship, study, quiet, and response, we will spend time with four different Psalms of Lament, as we allow their imagery to speak to our own minds, hearts, and souls."

Haiti: Lenten reflection from Haiti's bishop

[Episcopal News Service] Diocese of Haiti Bishop Jean Zaché Duracin offers the following Lenten reflection, commenting on the situation in Haiti and the need for faith, prayer and renewal in the midst of devastation caused by a magnitude-7 earthquake on Jan. 12. The text is provided in English and French.

Reflection by The Rt. Rev. Jean Zaché Duracin, Feb. 17

'This situation delivers us into faith'

January 12 was a terrible day for the Haitian people. The earthquake left not a soul untouched. There is not a single family that did not lose a close friend or member: Mothers, fathers, siblings, in some cases entire families disappeared.

As for resources, we have next to nothing. The wreckage is beyond imagination.

However, this situation delivers us into faith. I look at this as a baptism. ...

Developed by Sister Claire Joy of the Community of the Holy Spirit in New York City, the 2010 Lenten Meditations booklet is devoted to the theme, "Healing ourselves and a hurting world." Its daily meditations are designed to encourage, challenge and inspire members of our congregations to reflect on their lives and the steps they might take to help those who live in need.

News from the wider Church
Recent multimedia resources on Haiti

[Episcopal News Service] Close to a month after a Jan. 12 earthquake hit the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, images and descriptions of the damage continue to emerge, including two recent multimedia resources that have been added to the Episcopal Church's Web site. In a new video message available here, Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori shares her experiences from her Feb. 8 visit to Haiti where she witnessed the destruction caused by the quake and its impact on the Diocese of Haiti.

"The devastation on the ground is as bad as you've seen on the news," the presiding bishop reports in the video.

The second resource is an Episcopal News Service 12-photo image gallery, available here. The gallery features photographs taken by Eddy Alcindor, a Haitian who assists the Episcopal Diocese of Haiti's communication efforts.
It follows another gallery, uploaded Feb. 9, that features photos from Jefferts Schori's visit the previous day.

Alabama conference seeks to develop
Gospel-focused student ministries

The Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Ala., will host a theology conference Aug. 10-12 that aims to see the Gospel of Jesus Christ amplified and applied in student ministry. Registration is underway.

Conference organizers, who noted a growing trend of focusing student ministry on moral rules and emotional highs, say the conference, "Rooted: A Theology Conference for Student Ministry," will emphasize theology, not methodology, and will concentrate on  equipping student pastors with greater grounding in the Gospel in order to encourage students to follow Jesus.

The cost of attendance is $150 before June 1 and $200 from June 1 forward.
For more information or to register, visit www.rootedconference.com .

Please let us know what you would like to see included in future E-newsletters and send us news that you believe will be of interest to our readers.
