September 2009
Greetings,
Congratulations to Fakhreddin Azimi whose book The Quest for Democracy in Iran: A Century of Struggle Against Authoritarian Rule is a finalist for the Connecticut Book Award for Nonfiction, and to Deborah Dancy and Marilyn Nelson, who are each finalists: Deborah as Children's Illustrator and Marilyn as Children's Author for their book, The Freedom Business. For more details visit The Connecticut Center for the Book.
The fall semester began with streams of students winding up and down the aisles of General Books as they made their way to the checkout. The lines moved quickly and without complaint, especially with so many books to browse on the way. Nice to have the crowds back!
NEWS: We have over 220,000 e-books on our website. Soon, we will also be offering e-books in the EPUB open source platform that many publishers are adopting as the standard. These can be read on multiple devices including the Sony Reader. Please tell us what you think of e-books. Do you think they are the future? Are you intrigued? Dismayed? Send me a note. I want to hear your thoughts on the matter.
Autumn cheer!

Doug Anderson Keep Your Head Down Tuesday, September15, 4:00 pm, UConn Co-op
Doug Anderson's stirring memoir Keep Your Head Down tells the story of his tumultuous southern boyhood, his tour as a medic in the Vietnam War and the following years of transience and heavy drinking. From youth, Anderson was creative, playing drums, reading, writing, and taking photos. It's that creative impulse, perhaps, that helped him find his way. Keep Your Head Down is a tough book, unstinting in its honesty, but the pages also overflow with gentleness, a deep love for humanity, and, in the end, a zest for life. Anderson is an award-winning poet. This is his first book of prose. Co-sponsored with Creative Writing.Tune to WHUS at 1:30 pm on Thursday to hear John Murphy interview Doug Anderson. |
