Robert Thorson, the author of Stone by Stone and Exploring Stone Walls, turns his attention to the geology, ecology and cultural history of kettle lakes in his new book, Beyond Walden: the Hidden History of America's Kettle Lakes and Ponds. Kettle lakes are depressions formed by meltdown of glacial ice and filled with freshwater. There are no inlets. They can be found across the northern portion of the country from New England to the High Plains. Thorson is a professor of geology at UConn and an environmental columnist for the Hartford Courant and is widely known for his ability to make science accessible. Please join us in celebrating the publication of Beyond Walden.
