Almost Spring, Late February 2009
Greetings,
A certain faculty member was in the bookstore, weary I suppose from the cold, and he said to me in an off hand way, "Isn't it time for you to have a gardening book sale?" Good idea. Take a look at the bottom of this newsletter.

We're excited that UConn alum Charles Duelfer will be on campus March 5th at 4 to talk about his work for the United Nations looking for weapons in Iraq. The talk will be
in the new Bio/Phys. Building. His book Hide and Seek is riveting and disturbing and gets at the truth.

                                                                   Cheers!
                                                                   Suzy

Browsing Our Shelves
One of the pleasures of spending time in a bookstore is seeing the new books that have just arrived. Here are a few new books on our shelves that we particularly like.

Waltz with Bashir: A Lebanon War Story is one of the most powerfully rendered testimonies you will ever read. It is written by the Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman who wrote, produced and directed the animated documentary of the same name,  and illustrated by the Israeli artist David Polonsky, the art director and chief illustrator of the film. The book stands on its own merits as a work of art and though it can be read in less than an hour, will stay with you a very long time.

Our Life in Gardens by Joe Eck and Wayne Winterrowd, two of the best horticultural writers at work today, is an intimate look at North Hill, their Vermont home. In the past, Eck and Winterrowd have offered tours of their land in highly illustrated books, but this, graced with line drawings by Bobbi Angell, is a deep look at the plants they grow and their own history in the garden. You will relish their descriptions and opinions. Warning: this book will make you want to order more plants for your own garden.

Little Bee by the young, award-winning  British novelist Chris Cleave has been getting a lot of buzz from US booksellers.

Jennifer Baszile, The Black Girl Next Door
Thursday, February 26, 2009, 5:30 pm
African American Cultural Center

The American Dream - everybody has one. Whether it's rising from the depths of poverty or making it big in the business world, the American Dream has forever dictated the way our society works. For Jennifer Baszile, living in the crossroads of her
parents, American Dream meant constantly striving for success and accomplishment. In her powerful memoir, The Black Girl Next Door, Baszile reJenniferflects on her family's struggles and triumphs as she, her older sister Natalie, and her parents strove to achieve their dreams amidst the new "integrated" America "one soccer game and school dance at a time." A deeply personal view of a significant period of American social history, The Black Girl Next Door deftly balances childhood experiences with adult observations, creating an illuminating and poignant look at a unique time in our country's history. Baszile received her PhD from Princeton University and was the first African American female professor to join Yale University's history department. Baszile is a special guest of the UConn Co-op and the African American Cultural Center.

Tim Dorsey, Nuclear Jellyfish
Friday, February 27, 4:00 pm, UConn Co-op

 Dorsey

Popular novelist Tim Dorsey will read from Nuclear Jellyfish, his hilarious new tale of mayhem and mirth, starring none other than Serge who has a bit of an obsession with Florida history (including the birthplaces of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers). After a tragic tattoo parlor mishap, things really take a turn for Serge. "Guns, drugs, bloody crime scenes, historically relevant sex, library quiet time, glow-in the-dark deformities, hotel drink coupons, a naked woman in a shark cage, and John Travolta" are all part of this face paced story. Dorsey is the author of eleven previous novels including the New York Times bestseller, Atomic Lobster. A former reporter and editor for the Tampa Tribune, he continues to reside in Tampa, Florida. Free and open to the public but please call 860-486-5027 to reserve your seat.

The UConn Co-op is a member-owned independent bookstore serving the University of Connecticut and the wider academic community. We welcome everyone, young and old, through our doors and to our online bookstore.
