Greetings!

When Coach Jim Calhoun spoke here the other day before siging copies of his  new book, Passion to Lead, he talked at length about the role of books in his teen years, and the importance that reading has for him today; he reads 50 books a year, mostly fiction, some years biographies, and is always ready to embark on the journeys that books take him on. It was escaping into literature, he said, that helped him through the devastating loss of his dad, his "hero," when he was still a teen. Listening to him, I wished that Dana Gioia, Chairman of the National Endowment of the Arts, who is in such deep despair at the state of reading in the US today, could hear Calhoun's talk. Gioia might think that our Coach would make the perfect spokesperson to turn kids onto books. I think he would be right.

With the Dodd Center, we are doing our small part to help inspire young readers, and will together bring you our 16th Annual Connecticut Children's Book Fair. This year we have a few more authors for middle readers than in the past, so that our attendees who began coming as tots, can still find something wonderful to read.

                                                     See you soon!

 Spence & Chin

Leading China scholars Jonathan Spence and Annping Chin will talk about their newest books. Spence, Sterling Professor of History at Yale, is recognized as one of the foremost scholars of Chinese civilization from the 16th century to the present. His newest book, Return to Dragon Mountain: Memories of a Late Ming Man, looks at Zhang Dai, who was born to comfort and wealth in Ming China only to lose everything after the Manchu invasion. Zhang Dai spent the last 4 decades of his life describing the life he had lost. Spence has written numerous books on Chinese history, appealing to both professional historians and readers who enjoy a good tale.
Annping Chin, a senior lecturer at Yale, studies the Chinese intellectual tradition, Taoism, and Confucianism. Her newest book, The Authentic Confucius: A Life of Thought and Politics is a masterful account of the political life and intellectual development of the moral thinker who has remained a powerful force in China for more than two thousand years.
