Greetings! This semester, we have many wonderful authors and speakers visiting. Well, some aren't actually visitng: they are faculty or local authors. But others come from afar. Old friends and new, we are thrilled to celebrate their literary works. We invite you to join us. Autographed books often increase in value and they make delightful gifts. If you can't attend a reading in person but wish to purchase an autographed book, give us a call at 860-486-5027 and we'll take care of it for you. And please visit our website for complete, up to date listings as we will add more events throughout the semester.

Proust and the Squid The Story and Science of the Reading Brain
What occurs in our brains when we read? How do we learn to read? How does reading (and writing) change the way we think? How does literacy change the circuitry of the human brain? What are the causes of dyslexia? Tufts Cognitive neuroscientist Maryanne Wolf shares the results of her research and prodigious scholarship in this highly engrossing book. I urge every reader, every parent, every educator, and everyone contemplating the digital future to read this book today. Wolf not only gives us an in depth science of reading, but she looks deep into the past. She examines Socrates' arguments against his society's transition from an oral culture to a reading culture and ruminates on the parallels to our world today. She explains to us that there is not an inherited "reading" gene, but that reading itself causes the brain to change and then, discussing reading disabilities she offers rich insights. This is a book to read, ponder and discuss.

50th Anniversary of On the Road with Ann Charters Wednesday, September 12, 4:00 pm
Jack Kerouac's seminal novel, On the Road, was published 50 years ago this month. Ann Charters first met Kerouac "in the spring of 1956" when Peter Orlovsky took her to hear Allen Ginsberg's famous recitation of Howl in Berkley. She became his biographer and bibliographer, collected his letters, and is the leading authority on the Beats. She writes of On the Road, " the young people who responded to the book, who read it not as 'literature' but as an adventure, recognized that Kerouac was on their side, the side of youth and freedom, riding with Cassady over American highways, chasing after the great American adventure-freedom and open spaces, the chance to be yourself, to be free." She goes on to say, ""Kerouac had no idea that he had written a book that would turn on an entire generation. "Ann Charters is the author of Kerouac: A Biography, and the editor of Beat Down to Your Soul, The Portable Jack Kerouac Reader, and two volumes of Kerouac's Selected Letters. The collection of her stunning photographs, Beats & Company is now highly collectible.

Wally Lamb, Publication Party Tuesday, September 18, 6:30 pm
We are proud to host the launch for I'll Fly Away: Further Testimonies from the Women of York Prison, compiled and introduced by Wally Lamb. Lamb writes, "It was suicide that brought me to York C.I. Two of the inmates had ended their lives; others had tried. The teachers at the prison school were desperate to equip their students with ways of coping with the despair that had infected the institution." Twenty women from the writing workshop at York Correctional Institute that Lamb runs as a volunteer, share their experiences in the powerful essays that make up I'll Fly Away. Lamb is also the author of the bestselling novels, I Know This Much Is True and She's Come Undone, and he compiled a previous collection of essays from his workshop at York, Couldn't Keep It To Myself. A portion of the proceeds from the book sales this evening will be donated to The Sexual Assault Crisis Center of Eastern Connecticut, The Domestic Violence Program of the United States, and the University of Connecticut Violence Against Women Prevention Program. This event is free, but please call and let us know you are coming to ensure enough seating: 860-486-5027. Sponsored by the UConn Co-op and the Violence Against Women Prevention Program of the Women's Center.
