Greetings!
Lots of good stuff to read these days. I
devoured Ellen Litman's novel, The Last
Chicken in America and am very happy that
she will be joining the English Department
here. The book, due out in September, is an
insightful look at the Russian immigrant
community in Pittsburgh, filled with colorful
characters. We are lucky to have Ellen here
at the beginning of her sure-to -be
-illustrious writing career.
Another book coming this fall that I read
recently is Last Night I Dreamed of Peace:
The Diary of Dang Thuy. This moving diary
was written during the Vietnam War by a young
female physician. She describes her
frustration and sorrow when she loses a
patient, sometimes questions whether she did
all she could, but also writes of "M," her
lost love (who seems to have betrayed her)
and her intense feelings for her country and
her many deep friendships. Thankfully, the diary
was saved, at risk to himself as he was
disobeying orders, by an American officer.
Do put this
on your to-read list.
And I also just read an advance copy of Wally
Lamb's forthcoming, I'll Fly Away, his
newest collection of essays from the women in
his writing workshop at York. There's more
info later in this newsletter.Email us if
you'd like one of these
books reserved at
Co-op Books, or visit us online at UConn Co-op.
We're almost ready for our Harry Potter
Party. There's still time to sign up.
Stay cool!

Wally Lamb Interview in UPSTEET
Copies Available Now!
Vivian Dorsel, the editor of Upstreet
Number Three, interviews Wally Lamb in
the newest of this fine Berkshires-based
literary journal. Lamb, a favorite with
everyone here, is the author of two
best-selling novels, She's Come Undone
and I Know This Much is True and the
editor of Couldn't Keep It To Myself:
Testomonies from Our Imprisoned Sisters.
This September, Harper will publish a second
collection of essays from his workshop at
York Correctional Institution, I'll Fly
Away.
In the interview, Wally answers questions
about his writing process, his ideas, and the
book he's working on now,
The Hour I First Believed. Hooray! He says
he's almost finished. We have
copies of Upstreet at the Co-op or
email us at UConn Co-op.
