Greetings!

The forecasters are telling us that there will be no snow for the holidays this year. Should we be sad or happy about this? Stormy weather or not, you can stay close to home and shop here at the Co-op, or visit us online. We have books for everyone on your shopping list.

Congratulations to Ken Neubeck, emeritus, for winning the 2006 Gustavus Myers Book Award Honorable Mention for his book When Welfare Disappears. The award is given by the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights.

And congratulations to Marilyn Nelson who was recently honored by the Connecticut Center for the Book for her Lifetime Achievement in Service to the Literary Community.

Don't forget, we’re here all during break. It's a quiet time to browse. And we’ll be open the 23rd (10 am – 6pm) and the 24th (10am –3 pm) for your last minute shopping.

See you soon!

Suzy

(Some Holiday Cheer for You! During the year, we hold drawings for free books every Thursday night. Beginning December 18th, we will hold daily drawings through Christmas Eve. Plus, there are two coupons for you at the end of this newsletter).

 Adéle and Simon
 by Barbara McClintock

Adele & Simon Barbara McClintock lives in a lovely antique house in Windham Center with a working fireplace in her studio. She has illustrated many books and both written and illustrated several. Her newest, Adéle and Simon was named one of the top ten notable books for children by The New York Times this year.

Adéle and Simon is a truly splendid story about an absent minded little boy and the big sister who walks him home from school. Their path takes them through the environs of early 19th century Paris where they see puppets in the park, visit the Louvre, watch acrobats, and stop for sweets. All throughout their afternoon journey, the distracted young Simon loses his hat and drawings and crayons. McClintock’s illustrations are charming and intricate, with carefully researched details. The book is a pleasure to read out loud and the illustrations will provide hours of interest.

We think Adéle and Simonwill delight the young readers on your list.

 Little Red Riding Hood
retold and illustrated by Andrea Wisnewski

Little Red Riding Hood Andrea Wisnewski’s version of this classic tale offers just the right mix of scariness and a happy ending to make it suitable for all ages. She has beautifully illustrated the story with her amazing papercuts. These richly colored images have a wintry, New England feel and are loosely based on Sturbridge Village.

Andrea lives and works in Storrs. After creating her papercuts, she makes a metal plate of the images and then, using a handmade press that her husband built for her, she prints them. This is a unique process that she developed herself over years and gives her work the feel of woodcuts but with more fluid lines. The work and the book must be seen!

We think her Little Red Riding Hood belongs in every child’s library.
