Greetings!
Did you read or hear that when Vartan Gregorian (President
of Carnegie Corporation, former President of Brown) recently
spoke on the state of the press at a Harvard conference, he
suggested that universities band together and purchase
newspapers as a way of staving off what he sees as the
crisis in journalism? Interesting idea, isn’t? I know there is
talk of UConn starting a press, but what about buying a
newspaper? No, no not to get more coverage for UConn, but
to be a "guardian of democracy" as Gregorian put it, and an
"intermediary and an interpreter between society and
knowledge." Or is it too late to save journalism?
Congratulations to David Wagner (Ecology and Evolutionary
Biology) for being awarded the 2006 National Outdoor Book
Award for Caterpillars of Eastern North America in
the Nature Guidebooks category. Caterpillars has
been one of Princeton University Press' bestsellers this year.
It's the most delightfully written field guide you will ever
read. If you haven't picked up a copy yet, do so now or put it
on your wish list for the holidays.
Have a great Thanksgiving next week. Enjoy your time with
your family, slow down enough to read a book just for fun, and
of course, have a delicious feast.
As a special Happy Thanksgiving to you and a token of our
gratitude for your support, we’ve tucked a Thank Goodness
There Are So Many Good Books coupon at the end of this letter.
Yes, it's really special. Take a look.
Cheers,
Suzy

Connecticut Icons
50 Symbols of the Nutmeg State
Charles Monagan, the editor of Connecticut Magazine,
will talk about his new book, Connecticut Icons:50
Symbols of the Nutmeg State on Wednesday,
November 29, at 6:30 pm .
Monagan writes, “ Here we sit between Rhode Island clam
chowder and Manhattan clam chowder without a chowder to
call our own.” In this charming, small book, he identifies 50
places, objects, foods or events that do identify Connecticut:
Raggedy Ann, stonewalls, witch hazel and best of all, the
UConn Dairy Bar. Nicely illustrated, and engagingly written,
this is a book both residents and visitors will enjoy.
We think Connecticut Icons is the perfect gift for the
holidays. An autographed copy would be even more perfect.
Do stop by. If you can't make it, send an email or call us at
1-800-U-READ-It and we'll have a copy signed for you.

and 12th on campus. The Connecticut Children’s
Book Fair is a project of the UConn Co-op and the Thomas J.
