Greetings!

The road where I live is lined with a froth of purplish white asters. After the cold snap the other night, the sedum in my gardens turned a rich rust color and the roses deepened to the wondrous shade of pink they sport only in the autumn. And despite the dire predictions from the media, the leaves are, as always in October, beautiful reds, oranges and yellows. Does it get any better than this? Have you put a pumpkin on your doorstep yet?

No tricks here, but we do have a Halloween Treat for you. Read “Follow the Dots” at the bottom of this newsletter for some breathtaking savings. You won’t be disappointed. Actually, we have a LOT of TREATS for you this month.

And, though of course we encourage you to take long afternoon walks during these glorious days, do save time in your schedule to attend an event or two at the Co-op. You can hear Off Yer Rockers, UConn’s faculty rock band, perform here live, or Karen Weiss and Robert Sternberg talk about The New Psychology of Love. Events are a nice way to end your day on campus. See below for detailed listings of these and many other happenings.

Cheers,

Suzy

 Big-Box Swindle
The True Cost of Mega-Retailers and the Fight for America' Independent Businesses

BIG BOX SWINDLE Did you know that by shopping at local, independent stores, you boost the local economy? In fact, $45 of every $100 spent at a locally-owned business stays in the local economy but only $14 of that same $100 spent at a national store stays in the community.

Stacy Mitchell looks at these issues in Big-Box Swindle: The True Cost of Mega-Retailers and the Fight for America’s Independent Businesses, a book which we think is so important, we’ve made it a Co-op pick and are offering it for 15% off.

Ben Bagdikian, author of The New Media Monolopy calls Big-Box Swindle "a well-reserached and frightening book about an economic pandemic engulfing the United States," and goes on to explain, " the big boxes are draining cities and towns of money and bankrupting neighborhood businesses that have long been the backbone of American communities. Big-Box Swindle is a book every citizen needs to read."

Do read Mitchell's thoughtful and thought provoking work. And shop locally.
