Greetings!

The Boston Globe reports that this was the rainiest May and June since 1872! Will July be much drier? It always seems to average out, so we can surely expect some drought.

Meanwhile, with the price of gas in addition to the rain, many of us will be staying close to home this summer, or simply staying home. If you plan on vacationing in your own back yard, you will want some books to read while you sit on your deck or lie in your hammock.

You can order all the books your heart desires from the Co-op online, or, if you live in the area, take the short drive to campus. We have a few suggestions below. Happy Reading!

PS We are having a book sale this week and next in the mall way. Lots of goodies!

 Congratulations to Marilyn Nelson!
Included in The Best American Poetry 2006

Marilyn Nelson Marilyn Nelson’s sonnet Albert Hinkley was chosen by Billy Collins for this year’s Best American Poetry anthology to be published in September. The poem is one in a sequence of twelve sonnets that Nelson and Elizabeth Alexander each wrote about Miss Prudence Crandall’s Boarding School for Young Ladies of Color in Canterbury, Connecticut.

Written from the viewpoint of one of the young women, Albert Hinkley is a powerful imagining of the day a group of “ruffians” accosted Crandall’s students and overturned their wagon into a stream. In Nelson’s telling, the event was transformative for Hinkley, whom we know from history was a supporter of the school.

We also have copies of Marilyn's wonderful translation of The Ladder, a delightful children's picture book by Halfdan Rasmussen, one of Denmark's best loved poets.

And watch for Marilyn's other literary projects to be published this fall, including poetry written by returned Iraq War veterans.

 Ice Cream
 The Delicious History

Is there anything more summery than ice cream? UConn of course is famous for its rich ice cream. And though there’s no evidence that Wallace Stevens got out of Hartford and visited the UConn Dairy Bar, he did write, “ The only emperor is the emperor of ice cream.”

Now you can read the story of this refreshing confection in Ice Cream: the delicious history by Marilyn Powell. Powell shares Thomas Jefferson’s recipe for the cold treat, describes ice harvesting in ancient China, and brings us on a delightful and wide ranging romp throughout the ice cream eating ages.

Like all our carefully selected Co-op Picks, Ice Cream is specially priced.

 Yum! The UConn EcoGarden Club
 Gardens

I stopped by the lush vegetable gardens of the EcoGarden Club (formerly AgriHusky EcoGarden Club) on my way to the Co-op one morning last week. These energetic students have rows of tomatoes, onions, peas, corn and lots of other good stuff growing, plus a charming potting shed, and a big sky view. They are selling some of their produce to Dining Services and are thinking about bringing some to the Storrs Farmer’s Market to sell.

Committed to sustainability, this is a group of students to applaud.
