The One Minute Manager . . . . .
Business development efforts in most firms are
concentrated to a few ?rainmakers? who have
developed sizable client bases. These individuals are
given generous budgets and likely spend a high
proportion of the business development spending. It
seems to make sense that you devote your funds to
those that have demonstrated results.
However, there is an element of diminishing returns
with such an approach. A major rainmaker with a
high profile reputation can continue to
receive work with a lesser need for business
development efforts. In fact, as the client base
exceeds the million dollar value, you can expect a
well-earned period of coasting. The years of
effective marketing will reap the benefit of an on-
going climb in the clients.
Certainly your rainmakers deserve a generous budget
to maintain their position. After all, most of your
work comes from existing clients. However,
redirecting your efforts and dollars to the succeeding
partner level may deliver better results. There is
likely greater potential for new client growth from the
upcoming generation. I suspect that there is low
lying fruit that is not being picked.
Moving ?service partners? from the back room into
client development activities can be intimidating for
some. Many believe that rainmaking is the result of
nature more than nurture. However, skills training
and coaching can turn even the most reluctant
lawyer into a confident player for your firm?s client
growth. The outcome of having your firm ?firing on
all cylinders? is remarkable.
To respond to this need, the Management Counsel
Group has developed a business development
program that grows the inherent strengths of lawyers
and coaches them with the vital skill needed for your
firm?s success.
We welcome your enquiries and the opportunity to
assist your firm with your marketing needs.
