Stress & Breast Cancer
Women undergoing treatment for breast cancer can experience cognitive declines, such as decreased verbal fluency or loss of memory and attention. Often experienced by patients undergoing chemotherapy, the declines have become known as "chemo brain." However, a health psychologist at the University of Missouri says "chemo brain" isn't always to blame.

Stephanie Reid-Arndt, an associate professor and chair of the Health Psychology Department in the MU School of Health Professions, found that women who had undergone surgery for breast cancer but who had not yet received chemotherapy or hormone-replacement therapy experienced similar cognitive deficits as women undergoing chemotherapy. Patients who were stressed and had passive coping strategies to deal with their stress were more likely to experience cognitive declines.

Let Go of Old Goals & Help your Health
Most people go through life setting goals for themselves. But what happens when a life-altering experience makes those goals become unachievable or even unhealthy?

Alcohol & Breast Cancer
"Cells have different mechanisms to remove toxic substances, such as ethanol, the chemical name for alcohol, that represent a potential risk to them," explains María de Lourdes Rodríguez-Fragoso, professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Morelos in Mexico. "Unfortunately, sometimes these mechanisms produce other toxic substances, including some that are associated with the development of different types of cancer."

Greetings!

You might remember my mention in a previous newsletter about my dog, Lucy being treated for cancer. Well, she passed away at the end of April. The cancer she had was very aggressive and it was kept at bay by the chemo. But as soon as she completed her 6 rounds, the cancer started growing again. For a couple of weeks, we thought she was doing well and then one day she stopped eating. The cancer had invaded her liver and she was bleeding internally. We are very sad to have lost our sweet Lucy but know that her last 4 months were happy, fun and full of great food. Thank you all for your concern and thoughts over the months. I really appreciate your support.

I've been so distracted during the past months, that I just filed away emails from people who had sent me interesting articles. They were to be included in prior newsletters and never were. So, I finally posted them! You can read about exercise and cancer, a cancer care-giver's perspective, panic attacks during cancer treatment. I hope this information is helpful to you.

My husband and I have been using the same Allstate Insurance agent since we were married! Greg DeCarlo has been nothing but supportive and helpful to us in making sure we're covered in an emergency. He also has helped Pink-Link receive a $1,000 grant from Allstate Insurance two years in a row! Please read his article about cancer insurance and contact him directly with any questions.

We have 2 great contests this month! Rachel Pappas has donated 3 copies of her book, "Hopping Roller Coasters," about a mother and daughter's journeys with  bi-polar disease and breast cancer. Sam Friedman, founder of DogsHealth.com has donated a free monthly supply of his Winston's Joint System for Dogs to 3 of our members! See below for more information.

Finally, save the date for our next fundraiser, our 2nd Annual Sunday Tea Party on September 30th from 1pm - 4pm. Raleigh Studios in Hollywood will be hosting us again! We will be presenting a showing of "Jonna's Body Please Hold," which is a fantastic one-woman show detailing cancer from the perspective of a human body. You'll love it!

I hope you have a great month and are feeling well and empowered!

Sincerely,

Victoria Tashman

Monthly Contest
Pink-Link booth at YSC 2010We've got 2 great contests for you this month! Rachel Pappas, founder of 1Up on Cancer has donated 3 copies of her new book, "Hopping Roller Coasters." This book shows and tells, with raw honesty, a story of both love and abuse, with much reflection and believe it or not, some rather funny scenes. To enter the contest, send me an email and reply to the following question, "How has your breast cancer diagnosis affected your relationship with your husband and/or children and/or family?"

Our second contest is sponsored by DogsHealth.com, founded by Sam Friedman. He has donated a month's supply of his "Winston's Joint system for Dogs" for 3 of our members! To enter this contest, please send me an email and reply to the following question, "Describe a funny, sweet or endearing encounter you had with your dog or other pet."

All entries will be put in a large bowl and the winning names will be chosen at the beginning of June. Winners will be notified by email. Good luck!
