An Advocate's Perspective on the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium
by Debbie Laxague

Every December, breast cancer oncologists from around the world descend on San Antonio to discuss and learn about the newest research and practices in breast cancer care. My fellow advocate and friend, Debbie Laxague summarized the 2011 symposium beautifully.

Starch Intake my affect Breast Cancer Recurrence
Researchers have linked increased starch intake to a greater risk for breast cancer recurrence, according to results presented at the 2011 CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. "The results show that it's not just overall carbohydrates, but particularly starch," said Jennifer A. Emond, M.S., a public health doctoral student at the University of California, San Diego. "Women who increased their starch intake over one year were at a much likelier risk for recurring."

Greetings!

Gray-faced Lucy
I hope you had a wonderful holiday filled with family and friends! My holiday started out stressed with my son's shoulder surgery (who was up and out of the house the next day, by the way) and then relaxed on Christmas weekend. Then we found out that one of our dogs, Lucy, has cancer and will be going through chemo treatments. I couldn't believe it when the vet oncologist mentioned Adriamycin to treat her cancer! This was the dreaded drug of choice when I was going through my breast cancer treatment and apparently vets use this drug to treat Lucy's cancer, Hemangiosarcoma.  But the vet convinced me that dogs handle chemo much better than humans do. They don't lose their fur for instance. So, we'll see how she does. Hopefully the chemo will keep the cancer at bay and maybe she'll go into remission!

One of my new year's resolutions is to help more women in my breast cancer advocacy work. I'm planning on doing this not only through Pink-Link, but also through my blog, Facebook page and tweets. If you want to stay up-to-date with breast cancer news, like our Facebook page and follow me on Twitter. Every day I scour the internet for interesting information and current news articles that I think you'll be very interested in.

I look forward to staying in touch!

Sincerely,

Words from our Members
Pink-Link booth at YSC 2010For our September contest, I asked the questions, "What are you passionate about?" I received a number of responses and have posted some of them on my blog.

In October, I posed the question, "What life lessons have you learned?" Again, I posted some of the replies on my blog.

In December, I asked our members to tell me their New Year's resolutions. The #1 resolution is to eat better (healthier). The #2 resolution is to exercise more. And the #3 resolution is to live each day and celebrate life to the fullest. Do any of these sound familiar?

How to Become a Breast Cancer Thriver

The Breast Cancer Wellness Magazine has published a new book, "How We Became Breast Cancer Thrivers." It's full of stories of fellow breast cancer survivors and how they're celebrating life. My story is on page 189! If you make a $20 donation to Pink-Link, I'll mail you a copy of the book (includes shipping and handling). It's a great read and very inspirational. Please include your mailing address in the comments section of the PayPal form. Click the donate button below to buy the book or send a check payable to Pink-Link to the address below.
