Pink Power
October 2011
This is not a scary newsletter. It's just NOT pink!
Greetings!

I love the color pink. I embrace it's feminine qualities and love how it conveys strength and softness at the same time. But, I'm starting to dislike all the pink that surrounds us during the month of October. I think most people are "aware" of breast cancer. As a matter of fact, as Dr. Susan Love said so succinctly in her ABC News interview at the beginning of the month, "If the NFL players are all wearing pink gloves, I think we're aware!" That's why I chose to use the Halloween theme for this month's newsletter. Let's get away from the pink and into finding a cure and prevention for breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) has changed its mission to do just that, and we can all help!

First, join the Love/Avon Army of Women. Dr. Love is looking for all women, survivor or not, to be a part of her "army," ready to participate in upcoming breast cancer research. Currently, most research is done on mice and rats and did you know that they don't even get breast cancer! The scientists have to give it to them in order to study it! Dr. Love wants to change that. If there's research that can be done on women, then why not? After joining, you can choose if you want to participate. When a study is available, you receive an email. No one knows but you whether or not you click the link provided in the email. But if you do choose to participate, you'll be doing your share in finding a cure and eradicating this disease.

Second, support the NBCC. They've set a very realistic deadline to end breast cancer by January 2020. For $20 you can "get on the clock", with your photo in the seconds position on the website countdown clock. Your donation helps support their efforts in ending breast cancer.

Third, sign the Presidential petition written by the NBCC asking for President Obama's public commitment to work with the NBCC to end breast cancer by January 2020.

And last but not least, when you purchase a pink product this month, please make sure you know which organization will receive your donation! If the package says, "We support breast cancer awareness," or "A portion of the purchase price goes towards finding a cure," that doesn't mean anything! The package needs to clearly state WHICH organization will benefit from your purchase. It could be Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the American Cancer Society or many other worthwhile causes striving to help survivors and fund research, including Pink-Link (check out the cute NDY pink ribbon t-shirts and GiftBack.com) but the packaging MUST say the name of the organization!

So there you have it! I hope you're feeling well and have a good month. Remember, don't eat too much Halloween candy!

Sincerely,

Victoria Tashman

Survivor Pays it Forward
by Rachel Pappas, Founder of www.1UpOnCancer.com

In 1995, Susan Rafte's sister danced to save Susan's life, literally. Now Susan is paying it forward.

Not quite a year before Jane Weiner stepped onto the stage, her 'little sister' was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was a mother of an eight-month baby, and living in Houston.

"My sister was a professional dancer in New York and had wanted to use her art to help," says Susan.

Monthly Contest
We received a nice donation of books from Katrina Bos, author of "What if You Could Skip the Cancer?" It's a very interesting book describing Katrina's experience with the mind/body connection and breast cancer. To enter the contest, send me an email and answer the following question, "Please describe a major life lesson you learned from your breast cancer." All entries will be put in a bowl and at the beginning of November, I'll pick the winners. Good luck!
