Aromatase Inhibitors May Reduce  Mastectomy Rates

In the first large trial of its kind in the United States, researchers have shown that estrogen-lowering drugs can shrink tumors and reduce mastectomy rates for patients with stage 2 or 3 breast cancer.

Patients with these larger breast tumors have two options, says Matthew J. Ellis, MD, PhD, of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and principal investigator of the trial conducted by the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group. "One option is to undergo mastectomy. The second is to receive medication before surgery to reduce the size of the tumor so that breast-conserving surgery becomes possible," he says.

A Preventative Vaccine?

I've posted two articles on my blog continuing my discussion from the NBCC (National Breast Cancer Coalition) Advocacy Training Conference held in Washington DC in May. Read about the new interpretation of the War on Cancer and how the press and media have affected consumers views on cancer.  Then continue to learn about the possibility of a preventative vaccine for breast cancer. Can it be a reality? We cured Polio in 7 years, why not breast cancer?

Greetings!

Wearing the Not Done Yet t-shirt
I had lunch today with my friend Carol April, who founded NDY Not Done Yet t-shirts and other products. She's developed a new breast cancer awareness shirt where the "e" in "yet" is a pink ribbon! It's so cute! I tried posing with Lucy wearing the shirt but I'm not sure you can see it. She's also donating some shirts for our monthly contest in July, so watch out for that!

This month, we have 2 book giveaways that I think you'll really be interested in. My friend and fellow breast cancer advocate, Lisa Grey from the Pink Kitchen, has donated 2 books from her healthy eating series, Scones and Pestos. I've made some of the recipes and they're delicious! The second book is "The Foremost Good Fortune" by Susan Conley." It's a memoir about Susan's life in China and getting her breast cancer diagnosis overseas. See below for more information about both books and how to enter the contest.

The largest oncology conference happens at the beginning of June every year in Chicago and this year is no different. The ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) conference is where 30,000 doctors and researchers from around the globe attend to hear about new research studies and what's changed in oncology. Check out ASCO's website for a summary of presentations on a daily basis. For a summary of the entire conference, you can sign up for LBBC's (Living Beyond Breast Cancer) teleconference on June 22nd.

Pink-Link has partnered with the Cancer Legal Resource Center for their conferences this year. The first one is on June 24th in Chicago. This free event will provide patients, survivors, caregivers, advocates, navigators, and healthcare
professionals with valuable information about cancer-related legal issues, including: employment & taking time off work, health, disability and life insurance options, access to health care, insurance navigation and appeals, understanding health care reform, cancer community resources, genetics & the law, legislative advocacy, and education rights of children and young adults with cancer. If you're available, it's a great conference!

Lastly, I was contacted by Maureen Tiedeman from Wings for Injured Athletes and she's looking for calendar submissions for 2012. She wants quotes from anyone who has overcome adversity to include in next year's calendar. You can email her directly to submit your quote.

I hope you're feeling well and empowered! Have a wonderful month!

Sincerely,
