A group of researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center is developing a way to treat cancer by using lasers to light up tiny nanoparticles and destroy tumors with the ensuing heat.

Artwork Submission for ASCO Calendar

The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) accepts artwork submissions year-round for its annual Expressions of Hope wall calendar. Cancer has a profound effect on all the lives it touches. We invite anyone who has been affected by cancer - patients, friends, families, caregivers - to share their emotions through art and inspire hope in others. You must submit your artwork by August 16th.

Greetings!

My pink photoI hope you're having a nice summer so far. For me, the summer has been flying by and I'm a little sad about that. You see, I love summer! But, I stay focused and concentrate on one day at a time. I try to be in the moment for everything and think about Eckhart Tolle's quote, "Life is Now." I remind myself everyday to live to the fullest and be present for everything.

At the beginning of July, I went to Israel with my family. There were 12 of us traveling together and we had an incredible trip. I learned so much history and felt a unique bond to the land and the people. I definitely recommend including Israel in your travel plans. If you'd like to see some of my pictures, click here.

I've started a new blog! It's called CanSurvivorBlog.com and in it I'm going to write about various seminars, conferences and classes I attend, as well as inspirational articles and things I think you'd enjoy reading about.

Have a wonderful August and be in the moment for life's greatest joys!

Sincerely,

Victoria Tashman

New Breast Surgery Comes with Choices
by CURE Magazine writer Jeanne Erdmann
Joy Barrett wasn't thinking mastectomy. The 39-year-old mother was diagnosed in June 2009 with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive breast cancer. She wanted a lumpectomy to remove the area of DCIS in her left breast, not a mastectomy. Two such surgeries, though, came back showing cancer in the tissue margins and a subsequent MRI hinted at other problem spots. A friend said, "Just get rid of them." Barrett figured her friend wasn't as attached to her breasts as she was.

Seven Foods Even Farmers won't Eat!
For the past couple of years, I've been changing my diet. Not only to lose weight, but also to stay cancer free. My daughter, Marisa, has heard me talk about quitting coffee, sodas and sugar and she ran across this article a couple of weeks ago while surfing the web. I hope you enjoy it and maybe make some changes to your diet!
