Lymphedema
second article in the series by Gail Pekelis, MA, PT, CLT

Lymphedema, as previously stated, is a swelling of a body part from the abnormal accumulation of protein rich edema fluid in the affected area.  In post breast cancer, lymphedema can develop in the affected arm.  If lymph nodes are removed, there is an increased risk of developing lymphedema.

This 2nd article on lymphedema will present current assessment and treatment options for lymphedema.

Greetings!

Twice a year, I get my mammogram, and June is the month. Even though I'm a 5-year survivor, getting the mammogram produces a lot of anxiety. I'm fine throughout the procedure, although a little edgy with the technician, and then usually break down when I'm in the car on my way home. I've learned to baby myself when I get home too. If I feel like napping, I'll do it. Will it ever get any easier? As the years go by and treatment gets further and further away, I feel more energetic and alive, but I think the mammo anxiety will always be with me. It's a part of the "new" normal that goes along with being a survivor.

Dermalogica logoIn May, Pink-Link participated in the Revlon Run/Walk in Los Angeles. What a fantastic experience it was! We were part of 50,000 people walking in support of breast cancer! I want to thank FlatterMe which generously donated their Leg Pocket for all of our participants.

I hope you're feeling well and empowered! Have a wonderful month!

Sincerely,

Phrase of the Month
A Pink-Linker survivor friend of mine emailed me this phrase, which I love! I want to share it with you. Enjoy!

May today there be peace within.
May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others.
May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content with yourself just the way you are.
Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow you the freedom to sing, dance and love.
It is there for each and every one of us.

As a long-time Susan G. Komen for the CureŽ partner, New Balance is committed to supporting the mission of Komen for the CureŽ and raising funds through corporate and consumer donations. 2009 marks the company's 20th year as a proud sponsor of Susan G. Komen for the CureŽ. New Balance will celebrate this anniversary with the introduction of a pink special edition New Balance 993 running shoe and an expected $1 million donation to Susan G. Komen for the CureŽ from the proceeds of the Lace Up for the CureŽ collection. The fall 2009 New Balance Lace Up for the CureŽ footwear, apparel and accessories collection includes the WR769KM running shoe. The WR769KM, the official shoe of the Race for the CureŽ, is a performance running shoe designed to provide a stable, cushioned ride. Each shoe in the collection features the Susan G. Komen for the CureŽ pink ribbon logo and an insert with a repeating pattern of the ribbon. For more information about this partnership, visit www.newbalance.com/komen.

New Balance has generously donated 5 new pairs of shoes to Pink-Link! I love New Balance! I've been wearing them to play tennis for the past 13 years! They fit my feet perfectly and last a long time. In order to win a pair of shoes, please reply to this email with the answer to the following question. Because there is no wrong answer, in order to determine the winners, the names will be put into a bowl and 5 winners will be drawn. The winners will be contacted at the beginning of July. As the shoes will be mailed directly by New Balance, you will need to provide your shoe size and mailing address.

Here's the question: Please tell us what changes you have
made in your lifestyle to include healthy eating and staying active.
