Pink-Link
December/2008
Your friends at Pink-Link wish you a wonderful holiday season and a very happy New Year!
Greetings!

I can't believe I'm writing the December issue of our newsletter! Every year seems to fly by, but this year especially. Where has the time gone? As I look back over the year, many things have changed. Pink-Link started 2008 with just over 1,500 members and we end the year with 2,800! By our 3rd anniversary in February, we'll have reached 3,000. Although I'm happy about these numbers because it means our members can connect with and find support from a wide variety of survivors, I'm also saddened by the increase because it means there are more survivors out there.

But, until there's a cure, there's Pink-Link!

I hope you have a wonderful and healthy holiday season filled with love and friendship and I wish for you a healthy and empowered 2009!

December Contest
Book cover
We've received 4 copies of the new book, "Cancer is a Bitch or I'd rather be having a Midlife Crisis," written by Gail Konop Baker. We will mail these books to the 4 Pink-Link members who answer the following question correctly:
"How many women living in the US have been diagnosed and treated for breast cancer?"

If we receive more than 4 correct responses, the names will be put in a bowl and the 4 winners drawn from that pool.

We'd also like to thank the sponsors of our November contest:

"Stepping into the Ring"
I met with Nicole Johnson, writer and performer of "Stepping into the Ring," a one-woman show depicting the feelings and anguish of a breast cancer diagnosis.

Nicole is a wonderful, sensitive and caring woman who loves giving back and has embraced the breast cancer community with her telling portrayal. She's founded a company, Fresh Brewed Life, hope for the daily grind.

You can look forward to a Nicole Johnson / Pink-Link partnership in 2009!

Salad Bar Saavy
by Janice Baker, Pink-Link nutrition expert
Salad bars, whether as a dining out option or a takeout choice at the supermarket can be a great option for those watching their weight or a calorie laden minefield!

Although a great deal of the offerings are nutrient rich and low calorie fruits and vegetables, it doesn't take much to make an otherwise healthy salad contain the caloric and fat equivalent of a cheeseburger and fries.

Let's review some pointers to make sure your trips to the salad bar don't sideline your weight management progress.

First and foremost, like with doing grocery shopping, if you are overly hungry walking the salad bar line, everything will look especially good and your serving sizes of calorie laden offerings are more likely to be oversized.  Stick with the weight management survival skill of eating regular meals and snacks to keep your appetite under control.

Carol Fisher, creator of Tube-EZ

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 2005.  I opted to have a mastectomy  and a temporary implant. After surgery I had two drain tubes.  The drain tubes are connected to a collection bulb.  The collection bulb comes with a  safety pin so you can pin  to your clothing.  I had an uncomfortable and awkward experience with the drain tubes.  I never knew what to do with them.  In the shower, I tried an ace bandage and a terry cloth robe belt. So, I created a solution!
