Greetings!

When I was going through my breast cancer treatment, I kept visualizing the trip my family and I would take years later to Africa. We spent most of the month of July in Southern Africa, learning about the continent, culture, animals and history of mankind. But, visualizing this trip was vital in obtaining a successful survivorship. It provided hope, where I felt there was none, and a dream for a wonderful family experience. As Dave Balch, founder of the Patient/ Patner Project states "look forward to something," dreaming can provide a vital link to a healthy and fulfilling future after cancer treatment. Your dream might not be traveling to Africa, but even knowing that a trip to the beach is in your future, might help get through the dreary days of chemo. If you're interested, you can look at some of my photos from our amazing African adventure by clicking here. I hope you have a great August and are feeling well. Remember, be a dreamer!

The Pink T's
Life In FocusExperts now recognize that the health benefits of exercise go far beyond breast cancer recovery. Sami Papacek-Reis recently self-published the Pink T's Exercise Handbook, a collection of 90 exercises to help breast cancer survivors create a home fitness recovery program. She has generously donated 5 copies of her book to Pink-Link. The first 5 members who respond correctly to the following questions will receive a copy of the book. In your response, please include your name and mailing address. The names of the winners and answers to the following questions will be in next month's emailer:

1. True or False: Muscle weighs more than fat
2. What do you call the small computer that you can wear to track the amount of steps you take every day?
3. What 2 exercises may help your risk of reoccurence?
4. Can you still exercise if you've had axilary node removal?

Please hit "reply" to respond to these questions.

Road to the Iron Man
In our May emailer, we introduced you to Pink-Link member Leslie Biernat who is training for the Iron Man competition in Milwaukee in September, 2008. The following is another article documenting Leslie's road to the Iron Man:

Well it's time for an update on my road to the Iron man and what an interesting journey it is turning out to be.  To begin with I did not know much about training for one just enough to complete sprint distance triathlons like the Danskin so I needed to educate myself.  I have read several books now on the how to and how not to train for this event it's quite overwhelming actually.  There is so much that goes into it way beyond the actual running, swimming, and biking, it's the whole nutrition aspect of it too.  So I went online and purchased a training program to help me along the way or at least get me started but first I needed the proper equipment.
