Message from Stan Sena, President & CEO
The Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council
Denver, Colorado At left: Stan Sena
Gearing Up for Incredible Opportunities in 2012 As we complete the first quarter of the New Year, we are fully confident that we are continuing to set - and meet - unprecedented goals for both our Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) constituents and our corporate members in 2012 and beyond. With an incredibly strong staff bolstered by our corporate, government and small business enterprise volunteer network, the Council's growing financial strength abets our wide-ranging advocacy initiatives for all our tenured MBEs and our growing number of new MBEs and corporate members. The continued commitment that our sponsors have already pledged for 2012 is evidence that we are making solid inroads for all of our associates, whether they be small, minority business enterprises, corporations, or academic institutions. We were gratified to attract more and more participants representing our variety of MBE constituents and corporate members to our events and meetings, such as the kick off event that will be held at Cableland on February 1, and Corporate Roundtable hosted by Janus Capital Funds also in February, and the many Access Opportunity meetings planned for the remainder of 2012 with various corporate members. The Council's offices are abuzz with committee meetings and just general excitement in as we plan for the National Minority Supplier Development Council's conference and Business Opportunity Fair here in Denver slated for October 28-31, 2012. Keep abreast of late-breaking news by visiting our website often (www.rmmsdc.org). In addition to the National Minority Supplier Development Council's annual conference and Business Opportunity Fair in October 2012, watch for details about continued great programing by visiting our website. You will find news of our three signature events and remember to include them in your plans for 2012: - The Business Opportunity Event will be held on April 25, 2012;
- The Annual Golf Tournament at Arrowhead on June 15, 2012; and
- The Growth Through Partnership Conference on July 26, 2012.
Look for our Touching Bases newsletter for details about all these upcoming meetings and more as we continue to expand our meetings, signature annual events, and professional education opportunities. We could not bring all these events and activities to you if it were not for your participation. On behalf of the staff of the Council as well as the Denver MBDA Business Center (myself, Belinda Hooks, Brenda Lucero, Helena Haynes-Carter, Darrick Smith, and Doris Crim), please accept my continuing appreciation for your enthusiastic participation. The impact of your support has enabled the us to remain an increasingly powerful champion as well as a unique presence in the Rocky Mountain minority enterprise arena. Stan Sena

A Message from Belinda Hooks
Director of Operations

Together, Expect More! In 2011, The Council had a great year! Among all of our accomplishments we are especially pleased by the 20% increase in both our corporate memberships and in the number of minority business enterprises (MBEs) certified. We are also pleased with our execution of over fifty events last year. In 2012, we expect to continue that growth in both our corporate memberships and our MBE certifications. We also expect to continue our execution of high quality events in order to improve our learning and increase connections between our corporate members and to the MBEs. To help us achieve these expectations, we welcome Brenda Lucero to our team in the role of Special Projects Coordinator and Administrative Assistant. In the first two months of 2012, we have already held the following: - A Kickoff event at Cableland. Thanks to our generous sponsors: MillerCoors and Agile 1 for making this event happen;
- An Open House with Milender White Construction Company;
- An MBE Orientation;
- A Networking/Happy Hour with World Wide Technologies;
- A Corporate Roundtable event at Janus Capital Funds;
- As well as participated in three outreach events
These events, along with the many other activities scheduled in 2012, are precursors to the four major event that we hold this year (referenced in Stan's article or stated in the Calendar of Events). You are greatly encouraged to attend and participate. In the coming issues of the InTouch, we want to continue recognizing the successes of our MBEs and Corporate Members. Share your success with the Council. We want to showcase your growth, brand recognition and achievements within the business community. * * *
Finally, we bid a fond goodbye to Bill Dempsey as he assumes his new role as Vice President of Procurement with Shire Pharmaceuticals. We to acknowledge his strong commitment to minority business enterprise, as evidenced by participation from within MillerCoors (corporate member of the Rocky Mountain MSDC). Shire is one of the world's leading specialty biopharmaceutical companies. Bill Dempsey served as the Director of Procurement and Strategic Sourcing for MillerCoors. Bill's team led procurement activities including strategic sourcing, contract management, supplier management and operational purchasing for $3.5 billion of packaging and indirect material category spend. Prior to MillerCoors, Bill was a Managing Consultant for IBM Business Consulting Services/PwC Consulting in their supply chain/procurement practice. Bill led procurement transformation projects for world class organizations in the Entertainment, Consumer Products, Healthcare, Manufacturing and Financial sectors. In addition, Bill has experience as an Operations Engineer at UPS and Roadway Package (now Fedex Ground); and has worked as an Industrial Engineering Manager for HB Maynard. As pictured above, the Rocky Mountain MSDC awarded Bill the Nelson Ball Advocate of 2011 Award. To Bill's left is Tamela Lee formerly of the City & County of Denver and to Bill's right is Stan Sena, Rocky Mountain MSDC President & CEO. Thanks, Bill, for your leadership, vision and all the great MillerCoors libations. In 2012, "together, expect more!" We continue to welcome your input, contributions and active participation. Through your active engagement, we all receive valuable information and form meaningful partnerships that will contribute to your bottom line. A Message from the Helena Haynes-Carter, Director Denver MBDA Business Center (Operated by the Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council)
 At left: Helena Haynes-Carter
It has been approximately one year since the Denver MBDA Business Center was opened and the center has built a stable foundation. Strategic partnerships have been established with chambers of commerce, professional associations, and federal agencies. Agreements and working relationships are being piloted to strategically position and match center clients with prime contractors to systemically drive contracting and financing awards. A branding campaign driven by the national MBDA has unified the look and feel of the Center's marketing efforts. The new look reinforces the synergies that the Denver MBDA Business Center has with its 40 partner centers across the country. The MBDA mark is a carefully designed symbol that represents an ascending line chart, while also creating the letter "M". It expresses growth, movement, energy, stability, and power. Locally we have identified our unique value proposition in this region for business community as the linchpin organization that builds cohesion and competitiveness with major players in the minority business market. Our strategy is to secure through relationship and mutual benefit opportunities of significance then we match the MBE to the opportunity through proprietary vetting. We provide customized assessment, data mining, and match-making to both primes and MBEs. In 2011, the MBDA Business Center facilitated contracting and financing dollars in excess of $15M. Throughout the grant period, 85 jobs were created and 10 jobs were retained. The future of the Denver MBDA Business Center is promising. Through a multi-faceted effort between the minority business community, prime contractors, strategic partners, and the Center we can capitalize on this time to build wealth, support job growth and take business to the next level of success. A Message from the 2012 Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee
by Walker Fleming, Chair

From left: Walker Fleming, Isaac Gathings and Everett Fleming (of AxxessConnect) enjoy Lisa Downing's piano stylings (Vision Quest Entertainment) at the 2011 Business Opportunity Fair in Denver.
As we turn the page on another year, I look forward to a productive and prosperous 2012. Last year was challenging for many minority business enterprises (MBEs). Some redefined their business model and still others went out of business altogether. I am encouraged to see the US economy improving and I am encouraged to hear from several MBEs that 2012 has already presented more opportunity than there was in all of 2011.
Within this quarter, the Council along with the Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee held its Annual Business Meeting on March 7th at the Red Line located at 2350 Arapahoe Street in Denver. Please see photo collage below of Annual Business Meeting. On April 25th, the Council will present its "Business Opportunity Fair" (BOF) at Sports Authority Field at Mile High.
The annual golf tournament will be held once again at Arrowhead Golf Course on June 15th. This year, the National Minority Supplier Development Council will host its National Business Opportunity Fair and Trade Show October 28-31 of this year at the Colorado Convention Center. Additionally, there are many opportunities to attend Access Opportunity Meetings and other networking events.
Many new corporate members have been added since last year and that presents new opportunities for all of us.The Minority Business Enterprise Iput Committee will be focused on developing, connecting, and advocating for MBEs in 2012. Your MBE Input Committee has been busy staffing its standing committees and making plans for 2012. If you are interested in participating in any of the committees, please contact Belinda Hooks at the Council office for details.
I encourage all MBEs to take full advantage of these opportunities. The stage has been set for a prosperous year so let's find ways to grow our businesses by identifying and satisfying the procurement needs of our corporate members!

 The National Minority Supplier Development Council is on the Move
FUN FACTS FOR OUR 40TH ANNIVERSARY When the National Minority Purchasing Council (NMPC) was chartered in 1972, its primary function was to certify Asian, Black, Hispanic and Native American-owned minority business enterprises (MBEs) for its corporate members. As more companies were certified, the next task was to figure out how to keep track of them. The answer: a Minority Vendor Data Base. Today, the NMSDC database is known as the Minority Business Information System or MBISYS®. It is an electronic storehouse of more than 16,000 minority businesses certified by NMSDC's 37 affiliated councils. Each MBE has an MBISYS profile that provides a variety of information about the company: owner, size, location, description of the company's product or service, geographic coverage area, number of employees, certification date, etc. NMSDC's corporate members can access the password-protected database 24 hours a day to search for MBEs for procurement opportunities.

* * * NMSDC Executive Education Program for MBEs Slated for June MNSDC will offer its Advanced Management Education Program (AMEP) for owners of NMSDC-certified minority business enterprises (MBEs) June 3 through 7 at North-western University's Kellogg School of Management in Evanston, Illinois. This four-day executive education program is designed to provide chief executive officers of growth-oriented companies with the knowledge and tools to move their business to the next level of success. NMSDC corporate members recommend MBEs for the program, which is taught by the staff at the renowned Kellogg School of Management. The program also includes guest speakers who share their triumphs and challenges of entrepreneurship. To date, nearly 500 MBEs have completed AMEP. "When I was selected to attend the AMEP at Kellogg," said Vanessa Troyer, co-founder and chief executive officer of Architectural Mailboxes LLC., "I had no idea what I was in for. I soon learned I was provided with a great gift of education. The timing could not have been better. Our company was growing and looking to obtain a larger piece of the market share. After each classroom session, I discovered new tools that would help take our company to the next level. The goal of any education is to give the student the ability to reason and think critically. AMEP was the enabler that fully developed my critical thinking skills."
