Message from Stan Sena, President & CEO
The Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council
Denver, Colorado - December 20, 2011 At left: Stan Sena
As we wind down 2011, we celebrate our success and plan for continuing rebound in 2012 As we count down the days to the New Year, we are fully confident that the diverse steps we have taken in 2011 will continue to serve as the foundation for ever greater success for our MBE constituents and corporate members in 2012 and beyond. We have worked hard to place the Council in a position of financial strength, which will benefit our MBEs and corporate members. Along with our increased visibility and financial strength as your advocate, we also have witnessed record number of MBE certifications and corporate memberships. But as we lay the foundation for even greater outreach, we are also delighted to acknowledge the generosity of our sponsors throughout the banner year that was 2011. In fact, we are excited about the commitment that our sponsors have already given us for our 2012 programs. We have always relied on both our MBE and corporate sponsors to support us as we expand the Council even further in the upcoming years. A shining of example of this support from both our corporate members and our MBE constituents is our recent Holiday Party (held on Dec. 14 at Jazz@Jack's). This event is always well attended but this year was exceptional, both as to entertainment, food beyond compare, raffle and door prizes so worth vying for ... and a roster of MBE sponsors that we can only hope to match next year. We were gratified to attract over 180 participants representing our variety of MBE constituents and corporate members, and the constant merry buzz in the room was evidence of connections beings made throughout the evening. Of course, we are in high gear as the plan for the National Minority Supplier Development Council's conference and Business Opportunity Fair here in Denver in October 2012. Keep abreast of late-breaking news by visiting our website often (www.rmmsdc.org). Watch for continued great programing by visiting our website. You will find news of our three signature events and remember to include them in your plans for 2012: - The Business Opportunity Event in April 2012;
- The Annual Golf Tournament at Arrowhead on June 15, 2012; and
- The Growth Through Partnership Conference in July 2012.
Plans are also underway to host an even greater number of Access Opportunity meetings in 2012. Two such meetings are already scheduled for January 2012. Look for our Touching Bases newsletter for details, and, of course, you can find details as they emerge on our website. We will continue our popular Social Networking Events in February, March, May, and June. We could not bring all these events and activities to you if it were not for your participation. On behalf of the Council staff (myself, Belinda Hooks, Tanya Perea and Andrew Anderson), please accept my sincere gratitude for your collaboration, ever enduring and and growing steadily each year, that has led us to the conclusion of a remarkable year. The impact of your support is what has made the Council your strong champion as well as a unique presence in the minority business community. We wish you all the utmost success in 2012 and a safe and happy holiday season. Stan Sena

A Tribute to Nancy Gardner A true champion for small and minority-owned business enterprises
by Belinda Hooks, Director of Operations
At left: Belinda Hooks
We at the Rocky Mountain MSDC would like to thank Nancy Gardner for her years of service to the Council, Board of Directors and the business community in which she so willingly served. In November, 2011, Nancy retired from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory after being an employee since 1981. Some of Nancy's career highlights include: - Small Business Program, Board Chair for Small & Disadvantaged Business Opportunity Council (SADBOC);
- Served on Board for Colorado Women's Chamber of Commerce (CWCC); and
- Served on the Board of Directors (Secretary) for the Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council (Rocky Mountain MSDC)
- Top three awards (internal or external) -
Recipient of the prestigious RMMSDC Nelson Ball Advocate of the Year Award in 2009, 2009 NREL President's award, and 2004 Director's Award
Nancy Gardner (at left) served as the Small Business Partnerships Manager for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and dedicated employee since 1981. She was a strong advocate in NREL's commitment for seeking partnership opportunities with small and minority business entities for not only in providing essential products and services needed at the Laboratory but also finding unique partnerships in areas of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. Her main and constant focus was to make sure all Department of Energy (DOE)/(NREL) socioeconomic requirements are met which ultimately compliments her passion for helping small businesses obtain viable working opportunities with NREL and other large and/or federal agencies.
Nancy's twenty plus years of experience in the DOE/NREL Small Business Program has garnered her a large presence within the small business community, various chambers, councils and other diverse organizations. Nancy was an active committee member for MED Week Partners and attends numerous meetings, luncheons and other consequential events that ultimately helps small businesses connect with large corporations and other small business companies. The following quote exemplifies Nancy's belief system, both personally and professionally: Keep your thoughts positive, because your thoughts become your words. Keep your words positive, because your words become your behavior. Keep your behavior positive, because your behavior become your habits. Keep your habits positive, because you habits become your values. Keep your values positive, because your values become your destiny. We will miss Nancy's laughter, towering stature and participation at the Rocky Mountain MSDC. But, oh just wait, maybe I can recruit Nancy to volunteer at the myriad of events scheduled for 2012. I would love to hear Nancy say one more time, "Who moved the microphone?" They just don't make microphones for tall people.
One can only hope! In the spirit of the New Year, we wish Nancy continued success, good health and prosperity!!! Belinda Hooks |
A Message from the 2012 Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee
by Walker Fleming, Chair Elect

From left: Walker Fleming, Isaac Gathings and Everett Fleming (of AxxessConnect) enjoy Lisa Downing's piano stylings (Vision Quest Entertainment) at the 2011 Business Opportunity Fair in Denver.
First of all, I'd like to thank the current MBE Input Committee members and welcome the three new MBEIC Input Committee Members:
- Victoria Aguilar, The AR Group, LLP
- Wes Garnett, W. Garnett & Associates
- Richard Whayne Jr., Whayne Enterprises
I truly understand and respect the commitment that you all are making to volunteer your time and resource to work on behalf of all RMMSDC minority businesses.
I look forward to an exciting year for the Council in 2012. We've experienced significant corporate and minority business growth in 2011 and I see that as an opportunity to continue to provide access to corporations and matching of corporations and minority businesses to provide goods and services to their customers here in the US and abroad.
Our thanks to Stan Sena and his team for obtaining a grant to open a Minority Development Center here in Denver. I am very excited about the work that the Council is doing as the operator of the Denver Minority Business Center and its advocacy for minority businesses in the Rocky Mountain area. The MBDA is a department of the US Department of Commerce and has offices throughout the U.S. I'm reminded of what MBDA's National Director David Hinson said at the Atlanta NMSDC conference this year, "Minority businesses should view my staff and our offices as a way to expand their businesses nationwide." We should all be impressed with the new staff and the goals that they have for 2012.
Finally, Denver will be hosting the annual conference for the NMSDC in 2012. The annual conference is one of the largest conferences held each year in the United States. All registered minority businesses will have a unique opportunity to mingle with the 7,000 attendees expected and the large number of corporations that will be represented. While we will still be in a tough economy next year, now is the time to "sharpen the saw" and be prepared when opportunity presents itself. I would encourage all who can to register early to exhibit at the conference.
Happy holidays and I look forward to a prosperous 2012!
Walker Fleming

An Update from the MBDA Denver Minority Business Center
by Helena Hayes-Carter, Director
 At left: Helena Haynes-Carter
Greetings, I am pleased to introduce the first Denver Minority Business Center column in the Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council's (RMMSDC) In Touch e-Newsletter. The opening of the Denver Minority Business Center was part of a Minority Business Development Agency funded grant, agency expansion and redesign. We are pleased and humbled to be one of 5 new centers/locations selected for the expansion in a network of 40 centers across United States. The other new centers are located in Cleveland, OH, Boston, MA, and Minneapolis, MN and a satellite presence in Anchorage, AK. The agency's redesigned program eliminated geographic boundaries of the centers so we can assist minority entrepreneurs nationwide with access to markets, contracts and capital and offer strategic business consulting services. For new centers like the Denver MBC and its operator, (The Council), it means new resources for the minority business community through customized and strategic business consulting services. As this time of the year, I cannot help but reflect on 2011 and look ahead to 2012. This year was both busy and productive. The RMMSDC was awarded the competitive federal grant in April; we launched the center on June 28th, hired staff, formed strategic partnerships, began an education campaign to inform minority owned business of the unique opportunities available, and started operations. Specific accomplishments include; - Closed contract/procurement transactions of more than $4 Million dollars,
- 42 new clients,
- Development of a deal pipeline greater than $50M, and
- Participation in 5 Business-to-Business contracting events.
With a successful 2011 soon to close, I am excited as to what 2012 will bring for the Denver Minority Business Center and for the firms we serve. If you have not contacted the center as to how we can help grow and strengthen your firm, please contact us at info@colombc.org and visit our website at www.mbda.gov/businesscenters/denver. It has been my honor and privilege to work with each of you this past year and I look forward to continued growth and success in 2012. On behalf of MBDA, I extend to you and your families our warmest holiday wishes for a great new year. Helena Haynes Carter
