Message from Stan Sena, President & CEO
The Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council
The Rocky Mountain MSDC now operates... a MBDA Minority Business Center
Denver, Colorado - September 2011 At left: Stan Sena
Summer brings a variety of possibilities for Rocky Mountain MSDC certified minority business enterprises. Already we have seen phenomenal attendance for our golf event at Arrowhead on June 17. Our MBE and corporate sponsors enabled us to host our most successful golf event. Our participating MBEs took advantage of ample opportunities to connect with one another and also with or corporate sponsors on a perfect June day. Connections continue in abundance. If you were with us on April 20, 2011 at the Business Opportunity Fair, you know how excited we are to continue this abundance that The Rocky Mountain MSDC shares with its corporate members and Minority Business Enterprise constituents that now includes funding for a Minority Business Development Administration-sponsored Minority Business Center (MBDA MBC) This exciting new opportunity arrives not only with the promise of minority small business abundance but also with the assurance of the ability of the Rocky Mountain MSDC to expand its services to minority businesses in Colorado and throughout the Rocky Mountain region. Our Minority Business Center Grand Opening saw standing-room only crowds and prominent local, regional and national advocates for minority business enterprises. We introduced the Minority Business Center Director, Helena Haynes Carter. "The Rocky Mountain MSDC is committed to creating opportunities for companies, large or small, to meet and work together toward their mutual success and economic growth. This is in sync with our mission to drive the growth of minority business enterprises through business relationships with corporations, government, academic entities, and others." Stan Sena With our heritage as a catalyst for economic growth during the past 37 years, the Rocky Mountain MSDC continues to offer new and innovative events, services, programs and information that support the success of our certified minority-owned businesses and corporate members. For example, the Rocky Mountain MSDC is increasing its corporate membership across all industries and for all sizes of businesses. We are leveraging marketing and communications more fully to help our certified MBEs and corporate members take advantage of the myriad benefits of our programs and services. Please check our website frequently; we are adding more and more events to access opportunities with corporate members, social networking meetings, and corporate roundtable meetings that will hone our ability to offer contracting opportunities for our MBEs on behalf of our corporate members. We continue to be a catalyst to engage our members and MBEs in productive events that will yield contract opportunities, but unless you as an MBE attend these events, you will not be able to compete in a unique environment designed just for you as an minority business enterprise. We are already poised for optimal and self sustainable organization, which means that we are equipped to provide the services and achieve the mission of MBDA funded centers. Our services will include (but not be limited to):
- Client Consulting
- Financial Packaging
- Certification Assistance
- Market Opportunity Research
- MBE Advocacy
- Connecting with the MBE community at large
- Financing
- Bonding Assistance
- Procurement and Contracting Assistance
- Business to Business Matchmakers
Finally, with the new opportunities available to the Rocky Mountain MSDC as an MBDA Minority Business Center, I encourage you to keep apace with the Rocky Mountain MSDC as we increase the opportunities that we bring to you. We here at the Council did take not the summer off, as evidenced by the myriad of activities executed during this time period. Look for a separate InTouch that will highlight the myriad activities that took place over the summer. Keep researching our home page for updates on activities, events and other announcements. A Message from Belinda Hooks, Director of Operations
 September 2011
We have really enjoyed your participation and support over the Summer months for a wide variety of events and activities.
We all wished Breana Parker well as she departed in May for Chicago to pursue further education; we also welcomed two new team members, Robyn Chang as our Administrative and Marketing Coordinator and Tanya Perea as our new Certification Coordination. Andrew Anderson from Arapahoe Community College, our intern for over five months, left at the end of July.
Below is a recap of some of these events during which we met with and worked with you alongside a large audience of MBEs and corporate members.
June: Social Networking at the Yard House, Annual Golf Tournament (sold out) at Arrowhead; Corporate Roundtable meeting at Ameristar Casino in Black Hawk, CO (one of our newest corporate members);
July: Social Networking at the Yard House; Access Opportunity Meeting with Integrated Resources Systems (MBE) and Denver Transit Partners (a corporate member), held at the Champion Room of Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium (this event allowed 18 of our community partners to participate and showcase their respective organizations at no charge).
August: MBE Corporate Plus Event was hosted and sponsored by Milender White Construction Company, an Arvada, CO based MBE, which featured Agile1, Technology Integration Group, WorldWide Technologies, and SHI; a very successful MBE Outreach Event in Colorado Springs, hosted by TC logiQ (MBE); and the summer ended with full representation of buyer, supplier diversity and procurement personnel from our favorite brewing company, MillerCoors. This event was hosted by Sam Taylor's BBQ - an MBE - which provided succulent BBQ and a conviviality with cold, refreshing beer provided by MillerCoors.
Please look for a special edition of InTouch coming in October that will capture and highlight photos and reflections of the Summer events. Of course we could never do what we do without our invaluable volunteers and sponsors, both corporate and MBE - Thank you!

Message from Jasmin Espy Chair, Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee
At left, Jasmin Espy
Greetings MBEs
Over the Summer, I attended the 3rd Quarter NMBEIC meeting in Boston. It was an informative session with lively input and feedback from MBEIC Chairs, Council President's and the NMSDC staff. A good portion of the session focused on the strategic planning efforts of the NMSDC. Clearly the intent is to ensure the NMSDC is strategically aligned with our corporate member's supplier diversity goals but also the needs of our MBE's as well.
What was clear was a focus on the following areas:
- Technology
- Website Improvements
- Use of Social Media
- Database Management
- CRM - Customer Relationship Management
Accenture is leading the effort and this meeting offered the attendees the ability to provide input into the current analysis. The output will be a 5-year plan with completion not expected until early 2012. I applaud Joset B. Wright and her leadership team for undertaking this task.
We also heard from two senior corporate leaders on what is necessary for MBEs to be successful with their companies. There were several areas in the talks by Joseph Black, CPO of Aetna and Kevin Kelleher, CEO of Cartus. The one thing that I took away from their remarks was the need for MBEs to clearly understand what business they were in and what the value proposition was for doing business with them. MBE's/Suppliers who provide goods and services that are necessary components of the products or services that corporate members sell to their consumers are of being viewed by some corporations as much greater value to them than suppliers who provide "supportive" services that all businesses use and require - indirect products and services. While this might mean fewer potential customers, it might also translate into greater profits and sustainability. Bottom line is that MBEs have to get in the kitchen where corporations are doing the cooking and understand all piece parts of their product or service offering and find the value add you can bring to the table.
One way of learning more about our corporate members and what they provide is through the relationships that you build with them. The RMMSDC affords us all a myriad of opportunities to do just that. The calendar is full of events where you can network socially as well as more specific with the Access Opportunity Meetings. As I mentioned in my last In Touch article, the MBEIC Committee and the Contracts Committee have developed a Checklist that provides a list of suggestions to assist our MBE's in being prepared for the Access Opportunity Meetings. We have completed the list and it's being provided now for your reference. You will note that it incorporates a wide range of items as we have a broad group of MBE's with varied level of experience so we have covered the full spectrum of suggestions.
Lastly, don't forget that the Minority Business Development Center is now open for business. Make you appointment today to learn more about how you can benefit from their expertise and experience in helping MBE's Secure financial capital., Identify and access opportunities, Categorize immediate and long-term business needs, and Provide group and one on one training and education.

Spotlight on CPI Card Group
CPI Card Group is not your ordinary card manufacturer. We have maintained an excellent reputation in the card manufacturing industry for more than 20 years. CPI is different from other card manufacturers in that we offer three separate plants, each uniquely designed for a specific purpose. Unlike other companies who have card manufacturing as a secondary focus, we are only concerned about providing the best cards and service to our customers. It's all we do, so it's most important to us.
Our innovative and progressive approach, coupled with substantial experience, bring you the best of both worlds-experience and vision that is unmatched in the marketplace. Your project will be delivered on time, on budget, and matching your specifications.
CPI professionals, from all levels of the organization, are eager to help you with your business challenges. These knowledgeable professionals are trained to understand your business needs and will work with you every step of the way to reach your business goals.
CPI demonstrates the highest level of commitment to excellence. Our quality control experts are diligent about the quality of your product, checking and rechecking to ensure you receive the high quality product you deserve.
We are also committed to the environment, as proven by our green manufacturing initiatives. Our Colorado plant is powered by wind, making us the first and only card manufacturer in the United States to specify that 100% of our electricity is generated through wind power. CPI is also involved with recycling a majority of materials used in our manufacturing process.
CPI's production capabilities are some of the most progressive in the world. We have invested substantially into our infrastructure with state-of-the-art facilities, extensive employee training, and hiring the best professionals to provide our customers with a card production experience that exceeds expectations.
- We developed the first biodegradable PVC for plastic cards. This PVC has been in development for the past several years and is patent pending.
- CPI began investing in contactless smart chip technology before any other manufacturer in the United States. CPI continually leads the industry and card market by delivering the latest in contactless cards.
- We offer translucent cards for both commercial and financial markets, and provide full-face foil, textured, and scented cards.
- CPI offers the first secured spot-on lenticular card available in the market. This lenticular card provides 3-dimensional images which can be applied over the entire card face or in selected areas.

MBE Spotlight on Wystone Teas
From the Board Room to the Tea RoomMeet Wy Livingston, creator of Wystone's World Teas Corporation. From her early days as an operations manager with FedEx to the height of corporate experience as an executive team member and SVP of several Fortune 100 companies, the following attributes have been consistent throughout her twenty-five year career: Discipline, Principle, and Passion. DisciplineOne does not win corporate president awards and other accolades, break several industry customer satisfaction records, or be invited to sit as a board member of numerous non-profit and business associations without having discipline. Wy is a lead-by-example role model and has been responsible for teams in excess of one-thousand employees, multiple site locations, and budgets in excess of $60 million. PrinciplesDriven by principles and a strong work ethic, guided by integrity, and combined with a passion for excellence, you will find not a better leader to associate with in the business world. Wy is now bringing her expertise, developed in the corporate boardroom to the tearoom as the CEO and founder of Wystone's World Teas. IntegrityGreed has truly entered the board rooms of many corporations today. Wy has never compromised her values. Remembering her roots, Wy has always stuck to her guns, even though not always popular among her peers. Without a belief in something more powerful, you have nothing! PassionIf you believe, you can achieve. Wy began her journey to leave corporate America several years before the actual transition and now she wants to share her experiences and tea with everyone. Much like the cultivation and history of tea plantations in China, Japan, and Africa, where passion for the tea plant has and remains today, a passion for the people of those countries; organizations today also have to foster a level of passion about their mission, their people and their customers.
