Two Rocky Mountain MSDC companies honored during Minority Enterprise Development Week in Denver, Colorado The Rocky Mountain MSDC is one of 14 MED Week partners who hosted six dynamic events during the week of September 13-17. At the conclusion of the week, Business Awards were awarded in various categories. Qwest Communications, a corporate member of the Rocky MSDC, and Summit Container (a Rocky Mountain MSDC Minority Business Enterprise constituent) won honors for their unique contributions to minority business enterprise.
Congratulations to Qwest Communications and Summit Container for their enduring contributions to their communities and to the minority business arena in Colorado! MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR Summit Container Corporation is a 27 year old award-winning manufacturer of corrugated packaging. Their corporate headquarters are in Monument, Colorado. The firm has 3 primary manufacturing, assembly and logistic facilities in Monument, and Arvada Colorado and Downingtown, Pennsylvania. The company's objective is to not just provide creative cost effective quality packaging solutions, but to reach the highest levels of customer service. J. Joe Mena, President of Summit states that we want our customers to enjoy working with us. We have long held that any time one of Summit's employees contacts a customer - that customer should have a better day.
CORPORATION OF THE YEAR Qwest Communications Company is a leading provider of voice, video and data services. Qwest is the premier provider of full-service communications for people at work, at home or on the move. Qwest believes that embracing diversity and creating a culture of inclusion makes Qwest a better company. By incorporating a variety of viewpoints, insights and perspectives, Qwest is a better service provider, a better community partner and better able to serve its diverse employee and customer base. To achieve their goals, and assure continued opportunities and growth for MWDVBE suppliers, the Supplier Diversity Organization collaborates with Qwest's Procurement Organization's strategic sourcing managers, who oversee the daily management and strategic relationships with prime minority and non-minority suppliers. Qwest's Supplier Diversity team meets regularly with the strategic sourcing teams to provide assistance with any MWDVBE issues or questions; to assist with the Request for Proposal ("RFP") bidding processes; and to ensure that the strategic sourcing teams understand and incorporate Qwest's MWDVBE initiatives in contracts with Qwest. Qwest supports a number of diversity groups made up of Qwest employees who have a common interest in promoting the company's diversity philosophy. These internal resource groups have as a goal to participate in community outreach activities on behalf of Qwest and often refer suppliers to Qwest. At Qwest, creating sustainable supplier diversity participation in their supply chain is critically important, and they are very successful at making it happen. Message from Stan Sena, President & CEO
The Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council
Denver, Colorado - September 28, 2010
At left: Stan Sena and colleagues at the Business After Hours Celebration of MED Week (Minority Enterprise Development). September 15, 2010
Summer connections lead to fall harvest Summer has officially ended and now the real opportunity for doing business with our Corporate members begins. Have you had a chance to check out our Events Calendar on our website yet? We have a full schedule of events for October and November designed to provide our MBEs access to and opportunity from our Corporate members.
In September, over 50 MBEs and Corporate members who attended our Qwest Access Opportunity Meeting had a rare chance to listen to the Qwest procurement group talk about how to do business with them. Participants also learned moreabout the type of MBE that Qwest is looking to do business with, and, finally, Qwest described in detail business opportunities available to MBEs for the next three quarters! Attendees also got a chance to meet the Qwest procurement directors for the various buying disciplines within the Qwest business units - a rare face-to-face chance to interact with individuals who are responsible for over $3 BILLION DOLLARS of spend! Qwest rarely has the entire purchasing management group in a single event but, because of their relationship with the Council, they wanted to provide our MBEs an unprecedented opportunity to meet the decision makers. If you were there - great; you've got a leg up on your competition. If you weren't there - why not? You missed an opportunity.
In October and November, we will have other Access Opportunity Meetings with MillerCoors/Ball/Duran, The City & County of Denver, Shell Oil, and Xcel Energy. These are opportunities for our MBEs to gain access to corporate buyers AND to get information about purchasing opportunities they will have for the upcoming year. Savvy MBEs will make it a priority to attend - will you?
I want to thank Wes Garnett of W. Garnett & Associates for all his hard work and contribution to providing Council constituents with three great professional development workshops over the last few months. September's workshop featured writing effective job descriptions and evaluating employee performance. Although we have seen these types of workshops recently put on by Chambers and other organizations for a cost (typically anywhere from $79-$149), this Council and Wes provided these workshops for FREE. Why weren't you or some of your staff there?
Don't forget our monthly Social Networking Event at Marlowe's on the 16th Street Mall. For the price of a drink you can get the opportunity to meet many of your fellow MBEs and a number of our corporate members in an informal setting and ANOTHER chance to get to know each other better. It's amazing how much business gets done at this event.
Finally, I would like to welcome and introduce two new Corporate members to the Council. Janus Capital Group-Chris Desiato & Demesha McKinney; and Golden Aluminum-Leonard Krise & Jeff Frim. We will be highlighting each of these new members in our next few newsletters..
