Message from Stan Sena, President & CEO
The Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council

Denver, Colorado - June 18, 2010
(pictured from left: Stan Sena, President of The Council
congratulating Murugan Palani of Xcel Energy, and Jefferey McDonald of
Xcel Energy on their first place Finish. not pictured from winning team:
Kurt Boland and Tom Rogers of AlpineGMC)
I would like to thank everyone who participated in our June 18th Annual Golf Tournament at Arrowhead. All hands were needed and much appreciated, and everyone played a vital role in helping our Minority Business Enterprises to connect with our corporate members to discover business opportunities while in a relaxing environment.
Because the Rocky Mountain MSDC continues to target the "green" industry for corporate membership, I know you will join me in congratulating J.F. Sato & Associates, who recently received an award for sustainable design from the City of Lakewood for a sound wall construction along 6th Avenue. This sound wall utilized recovered solid waste products mixed with Portland cement to create a wall capable of resisting high wind loads. I believe this award to J.S. Sato & Associates demonstrates that Council-certified MBEs bring the capability to support this growing sector of our economy. One of J.F. Sato & Associates' engineers has met LEED's requirements for sustainable design development. Again, a hearty "congratulations" to all at J.F. Sato & Associates!
We at the Rocky Mountain MSDC hope that you are all looking forward to the 2010 Business Opportunity Fair because we are planning a very special event. On Thursday, August 5, you will find not only abundant but also unique opportunities to meet and CONNECT with corporate members who are ready, eager and willing to do business with minority business enterprises. Come prepared for a day of discovery and amazing business and social networking.
We are also gratified to have a number of new corporate members, including: FirstBank Data Corporation (www.efirstbank.com), White Lodging (www.whitelodging.com), Star Tek (www.startek.com), National Corporate Housing (www.nationalcorporate housing.com), and Denver Transit Partners, the very recent winner of RTD's Eagle P3 FasTracks Contract, a $2 billion project. As described in DBE Today:
"The Regional Transportation District (RTD) has selected Denver
Transit Partners for the much anticipated Eagle P3 Project. This single largest FasTracks
contract is to build and operate commuter rail lines to Denver
International Airport (DIA), Arvada-Wheat Ridge, and South Westminster
for 40 years.
Denver Transit Partners' $2.085 billion proposal (including RTD
project cost) came in $300 million lower than RTD's budget estimates
with plans to open the line to DIA by January 2016, 11 months ahead of
RTD's deadline. Sponsoring members of Denver Transit Partners are Fluor
Enterprises Inc. and Macquarie Capital Group Ltd. Other major team
members includes Ames Construction, Balfour Beatty Rail Inc., Alternate
Concepts Inc., HDR, Hyundai-Rotem USA, PBS&J, Parsons Brinckerhoff,
Interfleet Technology, Systra, Wabtec, and others.
Eagle P3 will add 47 miles of new rail under construction and/or
under contract to RTD's existing network, more than doubling the current
light rail system. This project represents nearly 40 percent of the
total FasTracks rail network now under contract.
This deal represents a new level in public-private partnerships; it
really elevates the model in a way we have not seen before. Denver
Transit Partners is bringing private financing this project and, under a
concession contract, will operate and maintain the rail service on
these lines for the next 40 years. Under this arraignment, called
Design-Build-Finance-Maintain, RTD greatly reduces it need for upfront
cash. Construction work, such as relocation of utilities and freight
tracks along the East Corridor is projected to start later this summer."
Congratulations to our new corporate member, the Denver Transit Partners. Below is a graphic which illustrates the composite of DTP:

Message from Jasmin T. Espy, Chair Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee
The MBE All
Hands Meeting was held on May 18, 2010.
The event was well attended by MBE's and non-certified MBEs as this
meeting provided an update of Council and MBE activities for 2010. One of the highlights of the meeting was the
opportunity for each participant to share their company profile. This generated a lot of energy and kindred
spirit to network - one of the key drivers for having this meeting. It was exciting to see the quality of dialog
and sharing after the meeting. A special thanks to Sam Taylor's BBQ for
the venue and the food and AC Brewery for the beer. We also appreciated
the support and attendance of Stan Sena from the Rocky Mountain MSDC, Nancy Gardner from
NREL and the Board of Directors.
If you haven't
heard, we had overwhelming response from MBEs and Corporations to support The
Annual Golf Event. It sold out with a
20% increase in revenues! If you haven't
done so, you might consider bookmarking the Council's website - more value-added
activities and events are being added daily and you don't want to miss out on
opportunities to keep you connected to the Council and our corporate members.
Wishing you a
great summer full of networking and added business opportunities!

Branding made simple ... and exciting by Kevin Knebl and Chris Knebl at professional education event on June 3
Understanding the Phenomenon of Social Media
This professional education seminar brought together two well-renowned and seasoned marketing and "branding" professionals, Kevin Knebl and Chris Kauza. Denver Water hosted the event.
Chris Kauza provided timely tips and techniques to help small businesses understand the crucial role that branding plays in growing a small business. Using the tagline, "A Brand Called You," Chris emphasized the importance of always thinking of yourself as your most important brand.
What is a Brand Anyway?
Kauza explained that "brand" derived from the Old Norse brandr, meaning "to burn"
and referred to the practice of burning a mark on a product or to identity a specific product, service or business protocol. "Branding has evolved from an identity tool to something that
is intended to imply value or acquisition." Branding is intrinsically tied to marketing. As marketing and communications guru Peter Drucker states, "Marketing and innovation are the money makers; everything else is a cost." Kauza also emphasized the importance of managing your own brand, which is actually managing yourself. You are your most important asset.
In the second workshop of the morning, Kevin Knebl addressed methods to grow your business using LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. He gave a simple yet precise definition of "social networking," a much used term but one not often understood. Knebl explained that networking is "the cultivation of mutually beneficial communication and interaction, involving give and taken, resulting in a win-win relationship for both parties." He further explained that "social networking is the use of technology combined with social interaction to create value." One statistic provided by Knebl that startled workshop participants is that "on average, people spend 60 minutes a day on Facebook or other social networking sites." He stated that on LinkedIn alone, there are 70 millions users today, and that number is growing exponentially.

I.
The purpose of the Contracts Committee is to facilitate mutually beneficial contractual relationships between certified MBEs and corporate members of the Council. The Contracts Committee continues to identify and work on various goals. The committee has outlined the following five goals. Develop guidelines for the meetings to allow great participation and produce end results; 3) Identify MBEs (per industry or service group) who will be attending Access Opportunity meetings; 4) Utilize the MBE InTouch ezine to identify potential contract opportunities; 5) Distribute and include Capability Statement document to MBEs during the recertification, reciprocal or new certification process. Capability Statement is available on-line and can be easily updated accordingly.
Further information about the Contracts Committee can be obtained from or directed to its MBE Co-Chairperson, Walker Fleming of AxxessConnect who can be reached at 866.820.5151.

Statement from NMSDC on conference relocation The National Minority Supplier
Development Council will hold its 2010 Conference and Business Opportunity Fair
October 24-27 in Miami Beach,
Florida. This conference was
originally scheduled for the same dates in Phoenix, Arizona. The decision to relocate the conference was made as a result
of the concerns of NMSDC's members and constituents about the impact of Arizona
S.B. 1070. The bill is inconsistent with the ideals and principles upon which
the NMSDC operates, including valuing diversity and inclusion for all. NOTE: The conference Housing
Bureau on the NMSDC Web site will be available beginning Tuesday, June 1, to
make online room reservations in Miami.
Online registration will be available beginning Tuesday, June 15. Additional Conference information will be communicated via
the NMSDC Web site at www.nmsdc.org.
