Message from Stan Sena, President & CEO
The Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council

Denver, Colorado - January 2010
(Pictured at left, left to right: Mike Mora of the Minority Business Development Agency, and Stan Sena, President & CEO of Rocky Mountain MSDC)
As Spring embraces us with its warm
presence here in the Rockies, I would like to say "welcome aboard" to
our newly-certified Minority Business Enterprises for the month of April 2010, and shout out a
hearty "welcome back" to our MBEs who have expressed their confidence
and support by recertifying with the Rocky Mountain MSDC. (These MBEs are listed to the left of this
article, along with a list of "reciprocals" corporations). The
life force of our organization is our ever-expanding MBE constituency, and certifying
new minority businesses each month is one of our most important
responsibilities.I would also like to
welcome our new corporate member, White Lodging, owner of 22 Marriott Hotels in
our region. We hope that our newly-certified
MBEs will join us at Arrowhead Golf Course on Friday, June 18. Our annual golf tournament is filling up
rapidly so please don't postpone registering if you haven't already done so. We always
have a robust mix of tenured MBEs, corporate members, and new MBEs who enjoy
playing this incredible course while still finding time to discover new
opportunities for business and social networking. Then, just as
summer is full upon us, we will present our 2010 Business Opportunity Fair on
August 5. By popular demand, The
Colorado Convention Center will host this conference again this year. Last year's event brought unique
opportunities for each participant, whether at lunch or during the trade show
and exhibition portion of the fair. We
will bring you two professional speakers and a number of innovative sessions
that will pique your interest and also be of practical value to both
corporations and minority businesses. Stay Connected
with this conference as you Step Up Your Game with the latest Game
Changers. Register now on our website
and don't forget to reserve your sponsorship. There are a number of affordable levels of sponsorship to demonstrate
your enterprise or corporation's support for minority businesses. The contract dollars which are directly
attributable to our annual Business Opportunity Fair continue to mount. Join us and stake your connection to our
corporate members and your fellow MBEs. Don't neglect to register to
participate in the many new activities we have scheduled for the second half of
this year. I can't remember a time when
The Rocky Mountain MSDC has offered so much variety in activities and access
opportunities with corporations. Just
through mid-October, we have scheduled over a dozen activities, all of which
are listed on the Home page of our website. Each activity has an individual link for registration. And rest assured that we will continue to add
more activities, each one with substance and depth. Our corporate members are demonstrating
increased support for our minority enterprise constituents by making their
facilities available for our Access Opportunity meetings. Corporate buyers and key decision makers are eager to connect with minority business
enterprise. And just to wind down, we
continue to bring you events such Social Networking: Beyond Business After Hours. Often the best deals are crafted in a relaxed
setting (remember the Golf Tournament on June 18).We continue to receive completed
Capability Statements from our MBEs, who are finding it convenient, easy and
quick to complete this important marketing tool online through our
website. The list of benefits from this
enhanced Capability Statement is long and enduring. Not only do we use this tool in marketing
your minority enterprise to our corporate members, but we will provide you with
a professionally designed one-page Capability Statement (generated from your
completion online) that you can use in any marketing initiative you may
have. Capability Statements are also a
great tool for introducing your products and services to local, state and
federal agencies. Don't delay in completing
this form online - opportunities are won and lost through the effective
utilization of such marketing tools. This is an opportune time for me to
welcome two new staff members of the Rocky Mountain MSDC: Belinda Hooks has joined us as our Director
of Operations. We will all benefit from
her unlimited energy and unquestionable dedication to minority business
enterprise. Anyone who knows Belinda or
has had the opportunity to serve alongside her on a committee or on our Board
of Directors also knows that she is inspirational in the extreme. Welcome aboard, Belinda. We also are fortunate to have Breana
Parker as our new Certification Coordinator. Breana possesses a deep understanding of the complex certification
process and brings an intelligence and energy to any aspect of her roles and
responsibilities with the Rocky Mountain MSDC. We are excited to have her with us. You will no doubt meet her at any one of a number of events: go up and introduce yourself and feel free to
ask her about aspect of certification or recertification with which you may
need help. Thank you for joining our
team, Breana. Finally, I would like to ask you to
join us on Tuesday, May 25, at the Rocky Mountain MSDC's offices (Fourth Floor
conference room), from 8 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for an Access Opportunity Event
with the City and County of Denver. Register now!Thank you for joining us and

Message from Jasmin T. Espy, Chair Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee
We are nearly six months into 2010 - it's time to reflect and
take note of the successes we have had at the Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier
Development Council (Rocky Mountain MSDC).
As you know, we started the year under new leadership with Stan Sena
taking the helm as President and CEO of the Rocky Mountain MSDC. Stan's history as an MBE combined with his
long-time commitment to the MBEIC and Board Member signaled a high level of dedication
to minority businesses. His vision and commitment
to aligning the Rocky Mountain MSDC, Board and the MBEIC has positioned our
collective body to rebuild and reestablish our brand in the marketplace.
We have had tremendous support from Board Members, MBEIC
leadership and MBE volunteers to assist the Events Committee in its mandate to
increase both the quality and quantity of program and networking activities. The changes are noticeable: -
2010 Growth Through Partnership conference was a resounding success as we achieved a 25%
increase in revenues and 24% increase in attendance. In addition, participant feedback was the
highest we had received in a number of years.
-
Workshops offered during the
first quarter varied in content and style, but always with a presentation point
of view to educate and inspire minority business owners.
-
We re-instituted the "New MBE
Orientation" providing critical information for new MBE's to "Get Connected -
Be Connected - Stay Connected" with the Rocky Mountain MSDC.
-
We added an abundance of MBEs
to include reciprocals.
-
We also added many new
Corporate Members
-
The new monthly social networking
event at Cilantro Fusion is allowing us to interact with other MBEs, Corporate
Members and prospective members in a social setting. We had over 30 in attendance at our first
event, and the numbers continue to grow.
-
We have scheduled our Access
Opportunity Meetings through most of the year - with more in the pipeline.
The Rocky Mountain MSDC is embarking upon a mission to be
recognized as the place to go to for MBE's to seek assistance, guidance,
training, education, networking and contracting opportunities.
Unless
you are connected and part of the Rocky Mountain MSDC's network, it will be
difficult to navigate through a process that will allow you to leverage
strategic sourcing opportunities, business relationships and MBE-to-MBE agreements.
I encourage you to "Stay Connected" - Support the Rocky Mountain MSDC - Be a catalyst for change in Colorado,
Wyoming, New Mexico and Utah for minority business development and supplier
diversity. Jasmin T. Espy Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee Chair Board Member

The Rocky Mountain MSDC's Standing Committees The MBEIC currently has two standing committees. They are the Contracts Committee and the Communications and Outreach Committee. Other committees are formed on an as needed basis.
I.
The purpose of the Contracts Committee is to facilitate mutually beneficial contractual relationships between certified MBEs and corporate members of the Council. The Contracts Committee continues to identify and work on various goals. The committee has outlined the following five goals. They are as follows: 1) Complete work on a database matrix that captures information supplied to the Council regarding corporations, MBEs, current and potential customers to identify contract, RFP's, and other growth opportunities; 2) Work to ensure that the Access Opportunity Meetings have key decision makers from "hosting" corporation. Develop guidelines for the meetings to allow great participation and produce end results; 3) Identify MBEs (per industry or service group) who will be attending Access Opportunity meetings; 4) Utilize the MBE InTouch ezine to identify potential contract opportunities; 5) Distribute and include Capability Statement document to MBEs during the recertification, reciprocal or new certification process. Capability Statement is available on-line and can be easily updated accordingly.
