Message from The President & CEO
The Rocky Mountain MSDC
Stan Sena

Denver, Colorado- In these times of economic challenge, Minority Business Enterprises need stanandmiketo avail themselves of every opportunity to place their company's products and/services in the forefront for consideration by corporate American.  In particular, the many Rocky Mountain MSDC-certified MBEs who wish to connect with our corporate members need to utilize all tools available to them to make their products and services known.  Our corporate members want to work with our MBE constituents and there is no better way, other than through a face-to-face encounter, than to use our new ENHANCED CAPABILITY STATEMENT.

Pictured above:  Stan Sena, right, with Mike Mora of the Minority Business Development Agency on Jan. 21, 2010, at National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Our new ENHANCED CAPABILITY STATEMENT will be available online as of February 19, 2010.  It will be a simple online fill-in that each our our MBE constituents should complete and submit so that we can take the information and place it into a template that will then be categorized as to products/services.

This template that we will customize for each MBE who completes the online application will be readily available to our corporate members so that they can take advantage of our MBE's many offerings that will match their unique corporate needs.  Our template, which will be created using a database with layout functions, will also be searchable.

Please see an example below of our ENHANCED CAPABILITY STATEMENT layout template below. One of our MBEs, Ron Hunter of TypeETC., has agreed to let us utilize this template to display his information.  You can easily see how such a one-page template will interest corporations with its "at-a-glance" display of all pertinent information.  We will, of course, take our MBE's individual logos and display them in the appropriate CAPABILITY STATEMENT.

We look forward to receiving for compilation all MBE capability statement data so that we can quickly, easily and with optimum effect match up our MBE constituents with our corporate members' needs.

The Rocky Mountain MSDC is committed to using the substantial resources of the Rocky Mountain MSDC to get our message out to both MBEs and corporations.  All that we are exposed to in this MBE arena reinforces our understanding that our local and regional MBE constituents must adapt their capabilities and their manner of promoting their services and products.  Their capability statements must be sophisticated and comprehensive -- we can work with MBEs in updating these important statements.  In fact, it is our responsibility to work with MBEs to evolve and help them achieve optimum outreach to corporations.
 that want and need to work with them in the Rocky Mountain Region."
Please look for information on our Home page of our website on February 19 about access to the ENHANCED CAPABILITY STATEMENT online form.

Regards,
Stan

Letter from the Chair
(MBE Input Committee)
Jasmin Espy
Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee

jasminespyAs I begin my two-year term as Chair of the MBE Input Committee, I want to thank the MBE Input Committee members for the confidence you've placed in me to serve as your chairperson.  I appreciate your support and am excited about the opportunity to work closely with you over the next two years.  We have a great legacy and foundation that we can build upon to further increase our role and value to the Rocky Mountain MSDC, our Corporate Members and fellow MBEs.

The Rocky Mountain MSDC's teme for this year, "Get Connected, Be Connected and Stay Connected" underscores the importance of connections and the value of relationships.  As we know, relationships are fundamental in driving contracting opportunities for minority businesses.  With your support, I'm optimistic that we can assist the Rocky Mountain MSDC in establishing new corporate relationships as well as enhancing existing alliances by demonstrating the economic value represented by minority businesses.

As a MBE Community, we have been resillient. We have survived and in some cases exceeded expectations in the face of declining corporate supplier diversity spending and programs.  Our economic recovery during 2010 will not change this landscape.  So we must press forward and look to increase our value proposition, expand our inventory of skills and ability to showcase our capabilitities effectively.  Additionally, as Corporate America continues to respond to their economic recovery with cut-backs or additional off-shoring, we should look within our MBE Community to increase MBE-to-MBE partnerships as another resource for growth and sustainability.

My plans with the support of the MBE Input Committee include the following:
1.  Grow the active participation of MBEs on the MBE Input Committee.
2.  Increase the participation of more MBEs in the MBE Input Committee so that we can all benefit from even greater input from the strong MBEs certified by the Rocky Mountain MSDC.
3.  Provide more opportunities to increase the skill level of all MBEs so we are seen as a valuable resource rather than merely as vendors.
4.  Support the Rocky Mountain MSDC in identifying more ways to provide input to new and existing Corporate Members so they can increase utilization of MBEs - making use of the sevices and talents we have within our ranks.
5.  Promote the brand of the Rocky Mountain MSDC in the market and the value of certification as a differentiator.

I welcome your thoughts and suggestions.  Please feel free to call me at 303.671.6100 (work) or 720.201.9619 (cell).

Let's all look forward to a highly productive year of partnerships, progress and prosperity.

Current Activities of the Rocky Mountain MSDC's Standing Committees

The MBEIC currently has two standing committees.  They are the Contracts Committee and the Communications and Outreach Committee.  Other committees are formed on an as needed basis.

I.
The purpose of the Contracts Committee is to facilitate mutually beneficial contractual relationships between certified MBEs and corporate members of the Council.  The Contracts Committee continues to identify and work on various goals.  The committee has outlined the following five goals. They are as follows:

1)      Complete work on a database matrix that captures information supplied to the Council regarding corporations, MBEs, current and potential customers to identify contract, RFP's, and other growth opportunities;
2)      Work to ensure that the Access Opportunity Meetings have key decision makers from "hosting" corporation.  Develop guidelines for the meetings to allow great participation and produce end results;
3)      Identify MBEs (per industry or service group) who will be attending Access Opportunity meetings;
4)      Utilize the MBE Communique to identify potential contract opportunities;
5)      Distribute and include Capability Statement document to MBEs during the recertification,
reciprocal or new certification process.   Capability Statement will be made available on on-line and can be easily updated accordingly.

Further information about the Contracts Committee can be obtained from or directed to its MBE Co-Chairperson, Walker Fleming of Axxess Connect who can be reached at 866.820.5151.

                                                II.
The purpose of the Communications and Outreach Committee is to develop, recommend and help implement strategies, programs, professional development workshops and seminars, MBE
Survey, monthly MBE Communique and procedures to maintain effective communications with the Rocky Mountain MSDC's MBEs and corporate members.  The committee is responsible for developing strategies to increase MBE certification and participation in the Rocky Mountain MSDC.  Members to the committee are:  Lily Poon (AdvenTech); Andra Hargrave (Global Sales Advisors); Ron Hunter (TypeEtc); Ellsworth Grant (EnviroFriendly Printing); and Kathryn Rae (Design to Market).  Further information regarding the Communications and Outreach Committee, may be obtained from or directed to its Chairperson, Belinda Hooks of PromoLinks, LLC who can be reached at 303.979.3405.

The Communications and Outreach Committee has produced a unique and picturesque Rocky Mountain MSDC 12-month calendar, a brochure, and a Save the Date postcard to be distributed in January 2010.  The committee is also working on the following deliverables:  Run list for In Touch; MBE orientation, professional development topics, speakers, webinars, and community outreach efforts.  This committee continues to support the Events Committee with marketing, news release, website updates, and more.
