A Special Tribute to Belinda Hooks
from the Communications Committee of the MBE Input Committee:

Every once in a while in life, you meet someone who gives you a new appreciation for the humankind's
possibilities. Life is generally very fast paced and unforgiving and many times we simply do not have the time or inclination to be kind, helpful, and/or concerned for our fellow human beings. This is not because people are naturally mean-spirited nor do we not want to help but rather, it's just life. Life could be unforgiving and oftentimes we simply do not react
well to its challenges.

Ms. Belinda Hooks, Founder and President of PromoLinks, LLC of Denver, Colorado has somehow been able to embrace life, no matter the challenge or circumstance. You can hear that wonderful and enduring laugh a mile in every direction; and, once heard, we smile and know that Belinda is in the house. I've known Belinda for many years now, and over the years, she has been consistently caring, thoughtful, and willing to help. In leading our MBEIC Communications Committee, she constantly seeks ways to show her appreciation and say thanks for the time we put into getting things done.

The entire MBE Input Committee Communications Committee and the Rocky Mountain MSDC would like to "Thank You" Belinda for her continued and tireless work to ensure that this organization remains vibrant, successful, and always moving in a forward direction."

Letter from the Chair
(MBE Input Committee)
J. F. Sato
Minority Business Enterprise Input Committee

The MBE Input Committee has elected a new leadership team for 2010:

  • Jasmin Espy - Chair
  • Belinda Hooks - Vice-Chair
  • Jared Casey - Secretary

These individuals, through their dedication and hard work, have earned the respect of the MBE Input Committee and the Board of Directors of the Rocky Mountain MSDC.  The Board has elected new officers for 2010.  The officers will also serve on the Executive Committee, including the MBEIC Chair.  One of our own, Stan Sena, serves as Rocky Mountain MSDC President & CEO.

2010 may be a year of positive economic changes and opportunity.  Many economists believe that the economy will grow at an annual rate of 2.5 to 3 percent in 2010.  Job creation through the federal stimuli programs and subsequent private sector spending can create opportunities for MBEs provided we stay engaged and focused on doing business with government agencies and corporate members.  The Rocky Mountain MSDC provides the access.  Whether access and opportunities can translate into contracts depend on taking initiatives as individuals and as an organization.  Please work with the leadership team in making 2010 the year of partnership and growth for MBEs and corporate members.  Please provide the MBE Input Committee with your support through participation in Council programs.

Have a safe and happy holiday season.
Jim

Corporate Spotlight:
MassMutual Financial Group
Regina Edmondson

From the Managing Editor:  Last month, we featured our new corporate member, Regina Edmondson of Wealth Concepts, LLC/Mass Mutual.  Due to the incredible opportunity that is offered in one of their unique programs, Life Bridge, we are featuring this article again.  To find out more about Life Bridge, please contact Regina directly.

regina5Regina Edmondson (pictured at right) helps business owners and individuals plan and meet their financial objectives.  Affiliated with Wealth Concepts, LLC/MassMutual Financial Group as a Financial Representative, Ms. Edmondson brings a team approach to her practice.

Working with minority business owners on financial topics such as structuring appropriate retirement plans, ways to retain key employees, and allowing the business to remain viable in the event of disability or death of an owner, are all topics Ms. Edmondson and her group work with on a daily basis.  "Particularly with many minority-owned businesses, owners have not been exposed to the type of work and strategies that can have a huge impact on their business and their families", she says.

There is an exciting new philanthropic program being made available by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) to individual employees who qualify.

The LifeBridgeSM Free Life Insurance Program is a free 10-year term life insurance policy designed to help parents or legal guardians who qualify protect their eligible children's education.  To be eligible, the proposed insured must be between the ages of 19 and 42, be employed full or part time, have a household income between $10,000 and $40,000, have a dependent under the age of 18, be a permanent legal United States resident, and be in reasonably good health (as determined by MassMutual's underwriting guidelines).  If the insured dies within the 10-year term of the policy, MassMutual will put $50,000 in trust, administered by The MassMutual Trust Company, FSB, to apply to the educational expenses of those dependent children.

Please join in the effort to bring this important program to those who qualify.

Current Activities of the Rocky Mountain MSDC's Standing Committees

The MBEIC currently has two standing committees.  They are the Contracts Committee and the Communications and Outreach Committee.  Other committees are formed on an as needed basis.

I.
The purpose of the Contracts Committee is to facilitate mutually beneficial contractual relationships between certified MBEs and corporate members of the Council.  The Contracts Committee continues to identify and work on various goals.  The committee has outlined the following five goals. They are as follows:

1)      Complete work on a database matrix that captures information supplied to the Council regarding corporations, MBEs, current and potential customers to identify contract, RFP's, and other growth opportunities;
2)      Work to ensure that the Access Opportunity Meetings have key decision makers from "hosting" corporation.  Develop guidelines for the meetings to allow great participation and produce end results;
3)      Identify MBEs (per industry or service group) who will be attending Access Opportunity meetings;
4)      Utilize the MBE Communique to identify potential contract opportunities;
5)      Distribute and include Capability Statement document to MBEs during the recertification,
reciprocal or new certification process.   Capability Statement will be made available on on-line and can be easily updated accordingly.

Further information about the Contracts Committee can be obtained from or directed to its MBE Co-Chairperson, Walker Fleming of Axxess Connect who can be reached at 866.820.5151.

                                                II.
The purpose of the Communications and Outreach Committee is to develop, recommend and help implement strategies, programs, professional development workshops and seminars, MBE
Survey, monthly MBE Communique and procedures to maintain effective communications with the Rocky Mountain MSDC's MBEs and corporate members.  The committee is responsible for developing strategies to increase MBE certification and participation in the Rocky Mountain MSDC.  Members to the committee are:  Lily Poon (AdvenTech); Andra Hargrave (Global Sales Advisors); Ron Hunter (TypeEtc); Ellsworth Grant (EnviroFriendly Printing); and Kathryn Rae (Design to Market).  Further information regarding the Communications and Outreach Committee, may be obtained from or directed to its Chairperson, Belinda Hooks of PromoLinks, LLC who can be reached at 303.979.3405.

The Communications and Outreach Committee has produced a unique and picturesque Rocky Mountain MSDC 12-month calendar, a brochure, and a Save the Date postcard to be distributed in January 2010.  The committee is also working on the following deliverables:  Run list for In Touch; MBE orientation, professional development topics, speakers, webinars, and community outreach efforts.
